Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I traded out my Brooks Swift for a cheapie yesterday.

No I didn't get rid of it. I was just tired of it getting rained on on my commuter bike.

Here are a few things I noticed:

1. The rails of the old Performance ti saddle I put on the bike extend a little further towards the nose of the saddle. The bike I was running the Brooks on always felt a little cramped. Now this is not a problem. The Brooks will now go back on my road bike. It has a Salsa Shaft post which has enough setback to put the saddle where I need it relative to the bottom bracket.

2. The cheap Performance saddle is not as picky about tilt. With the Brooks there's a definite sweet spot that's really hard to find.

3. Narrow saddles don't bother me - at least not for short to medium distances.

4. A Brooks is not the only kind of saddle that conforms to your butt. The POS Performance saddle I've had for 6 years knows my butt pretty well as it turns out.

I recently swapped out my Brooks Pro for
a Fizik Aliante.
I got tired of fiddling with the brooks, I could never
quite get as comfortable as I would have liked and expected.
I guess I never did find that elusive sweet spot.
The Fizik is also a bit fiddly when setting up but a whole
lot more forgiving than the brooks.
I'm not concerned with water on the underside of the saddle
(where I believe most of the damage to a brooks comes in).
I still have and love a B17 but it just doesn't fit on my Serotta.

marqueemoon, do you also feel like a traitor to the cult of Brooks?

I just think there's more than one type of comfort. A Brooks is one kind, and given my preferred riding position it's tough to make it work for me.
