first road ride question...?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i just did my first road ride. i have been mountain biking a few times and wanted to take up road riding. unfortunately my first road ride was somewhat uncomfortable. is it that i am not used to riding on a riding on a road bike for that length and time? i did about 14 miles today. i adjusted the bike as needed. will i get used to riding after a while? i am probably just out of shape. haha

thanks

You will get use to road riding. I was a mtn. biker first and road riding is a little different. Must build up your butt callous for long distance. Seriously, try Butt-R cream, it works!

your back is likely not in road riding condition. its an entire new position and the back will need to adjust to it. good luck. later.

After a week or two, your body will be used to the road bike. Also, once you have the bike dialed in correctly, that'll help too. Stick with it!

Welcome, you will get use to the new position on the road bike. Padded bike shorts and butt-butter help a lot more when on the road then when off road.

Welcome to the best thing in the world you can do with your time. Just keep at it and you will find that one day you won't even feel the discomfort and you will wonder what the problem was in the first place. You probably are a bit out of road cycling shape, but don't worry, just keep logging the miles. You have been bitten by the bug and noone is immune.....enjoy!

Cheers,

Brian

Are you sure that your bike is properly fitted to your body type and riding style. You might start with trying to get you seat and handlebar stem at the same height. This will take some strain off your back, arms, wrist and neck. If you have a sore rear, that is very common. It only takes about a week of riding to get the body used to the new muscle usage.

You can check out Rivbike.com or sheldonbrown.com for some good information of bike fitting.

You're making a pretty big leap. The first time I did on long ride on my mtn/commuter I came back with a sore ass/neck/body.

Building up mileage, learning to ride a road bike and adjusting the bike to fit you are all things that take time. Just keep building up mileage at a gradual pace and get your bike fit. Lots of info here and elsewhere on fitting.

I probably started out at your fitness level and worked up to riding centuries within 6 months. I didn't finish in record time, but had practically no pain or soreness at the end.

Keep working at it.

As Metal Cowboy suggests, is the new bike set up properly for you? Fit is critical.

What was uncomfortable? The answer will help diagnose the possible problems.

I too am a former mountain bike rider. Adjusting to a road bike takes time - it isn't the most natural position to be in for a long time. Just be certain your bike fits your perfectly; after that, its nothing more than riding. In time, you will adjust and never want to stop.

I also came to road biking from a mountain riding question. If your bike is sized correctly you will adjust. I know that on my first road bike it took me some time to adjust and I had a sore neck and back for the first few rides
