Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To Sock or not to sock...

I'm training for a Sprint Tri and had someone tell me that most people don't wear socks while cycling. I tried it today and went for 22 miles w/no discomfort. Is this pretty common or do most people wear socks?

I have to wear socks ... heavy wool ones (Kodiak brand) ... or my feet would freeze. Literally.

Well, one benefit of wearing socks when riding in hot temps is to help avoid "hot foot".

But if that isn't an issue for you, then I figure you could go either way on the subject of socks. Some cyclists wear them, some don't.

Of course in the frigid North you need socks. I've lived in Canada and I know the silly misconceptions; but it can get frigid, except in the lower Pacific NW. I've seen temps of 30º on both sides of zero in Southern Ontario.

One advantage: If you have a sock and a roll of pennies, that's about all you need for most self-defence situations.

I knit my own out of Brown Sheep Wildfoote.

Are you going to wear socks for the run? If so, it doesn't save you any time to not wear socks on the bike (except that it's marginally more difficult to put socks on wet/sandy feet).

I wear socks for neither.

Sweaty feet. Need my coolmax's. Some of my shoes have a little play, would not that cause friction. Besides, how could I ride without my Beer steins or California bear logo's..

I wear "peds" - those short runners socks that only hit your ankle. I have a pair of cycling specific socks, which are a bit thin but okay too.

I think the person was realy saying that most people don't wear socks while doing the cycling stage in a triathalon. It saves a few seconds in the changeover and its pretty normal for triatheletes around here.

For cycling only I like socks.

Regards, Anthony

I keep my spare tubes in an old sock. Protects them in the seatbag, and I can put the sock on my hand when pulling the rear wheel / chain. Keeps me clean.

My feet like socks when riding.

One other thing I have heard, for short Tri's like sprints, is to put pedals with cages and bike in your running shoes. I mean it is such a short bike, you wouldn't notice that much, and T2 would be very short indeed.

I always ride and race on the bike without socks.

Anything below Ironman distance, also run in racing flats without socks.

For shorter races I use tri specific shoes (single strap and heel pull tab) and leave on the pedals and put feet in whilst riding. Ironman I use three strap shoes for the added support.

With tri shoes and runners with elastic laces, even in sprint races I don't see the benefit of the platform pedals.
