Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nerds: Help me back up 21GB of 2005 OLN TDF coverage

I'd like to SCP this to somebody with a bit of extra disk space for backup purposes. These are opendivx4 copies of every stage of the 2005 TDF with the commercials cut out, plus stage maps and elevation profiles. The total is 21GB. My upstream is 450kbps so it will take a while.

% ls -alh
total 21951282

Wow I'd totally be interested in grabbing a few of those stages. How do we do this?

pm me with a ip, login/password and path location, my first choice would be to use the standard openssh scp via SSH2/AES. i'm hoping to find somebody with a system on >10Mbps of bandwidth so that we can share the whole package with others who want it at higher speeds (my upstream is seriously slow).

a little tech joke:

Where's the Tux?

I'm only on about 5mbps of bandwidth which will give you around 60kbs dedicated upload speed(bandwidth divided by 8 = dedicated up/download speed). It's slow, but the server is in my house.

If I can get it onto a system with a fast connection, run by somebody who can spare the bandwidth, EVERYBODY will get a copy...

give it to someone that has some serious upstream, then share it to say two other people on bittorrent, then share it again say 5 people and so on and so on.
I want some of those stages!

You think your upload is bad mine is only 128k. Welcome to Australia

these were obtained via bittorrent originally... I'm thinking about starting another torrent, but not sure whether to do it as separate files or one huge 21GB .RAR

whatever you do DONT ZIP THEM for bittorent, just put them in a folder and bittorrent the entire folder.

Why try and compress a file that is already compressed? If you rar/zip them you will find seeds disappearing as they unrar it and delete the original folder.

Are there really that many "geeks" on this BF?

BTW, I can say geek because I am one. If you're on this forum and not a geek, you're not allowed to use the word.

I think bittorrent is the way to go, cause it distributes the network load. 21 gigs on one server, for hundreds of BF members to download means several terabytes of data transfer, which can get costly...

Why do people jump to this conclusion, just because someone knows some stuff about tech doesnt make them a geek. A geek is someone who is obsessed by computing and is a OCP.

I dont go around calling all you gear nuts and mechanics bike geeks. I listen and learn more about bikes

Whoa. Whoa. Throw it in neutral dude. I use the term "geek" extremely loosley... hence the quotations. Would a smiley face make it seem less aggessive?

I think 'geek' means something different in australian slang, possibly offensive... in the USA it's interchangable with nerd. no need for anyone to worry about it.
