Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tour De Chesapeake 2006....Who's In?

This looks like it is going to be a good time. I have ridden a few in the Hampton Roads area and they all turn out great.

Dates are May 19-21. The actual ride is on 20 May.

Distances include: 15, 18, 35, 45 or 62 miles.

Personally I plan to ride the 62 as my first milestone of the season.

So anyone interested? Perhaps we could all meet down there and ride as a group. I think this is also a good chance for VA/MD riders to ride together.

Im still undecided on this one or the Adams County PA anual horse farm tour. That ride starts down the street from my house, so I think I'll go woth that one, but the bay tour sounds nice too. I'll let you know, and if I decide on the bay ride, we could meet.

I am doing the Tour De Chesapeake 2006 - I sent my money in two weeks ago. I have also rented a house for Friday/Sat/Sunday evenings on the water. Two story and sleeps about 6. We may have some room for other riders to stay at the house - would cost you maybe $100 for all three days (the house is costing me a lot for the whole weekend, but it will be worth it). PM me if you need a place to stay and $100 sounds reasonable to you. We'll be leaving late Thursday after work and arriving between 4pm -6pm Friday. We live in KY. My sister and bro-in-law may be coming, and also a cycling friend from Minnesota.

Wow, that's a heck of a trip from KY. Glad to hear you are coming out.

My family keeps a townhome in Hampton Roads, so I will be staying there. That's a great offer, hopefully non-locals will take you up on that offer, mark.

We will have to figure out some way to find each other the day of the event. hmmm.

I would love to. But my wife is due May 11 with our second child. I highly doubt she is gonna let me leave for the weekend 10 days after that.

But I already have my room reserved for the 2006 Seagull. Hope it is a little drier this year. I think my shoes are still wet.

It sounds great but when you go to their website there is almost no information. No price, starting point etc.

That's odd, I would try it again. The blank boxes on your screen capture should be links, for some reason it appears they did not load.

Derath - where is this 2006 seagull?

Salisbury MD. It is a fun ride and pretty big. I think like 6000+ riders. Last year it was right around Katrina if I remember correctly (beginning of october) and it was the wettest day I have ever had.

Rooms tend to fill up fast. We couldn't get rooms last year.

The Tour De Chesapeake 2006 Web site had a lot of information including a form you can print and 1) mail or 2) fax. They even accept credit cards. I printed it and faxed it a few weeks ago, and my account reflects the debit so I know it all is working and they get their faxes/are taking applications. Better hurry - I think they cut it off at the first 1,000.

I read that as "Tour de Cheapskate." Now that sounds like my kind of tour.

Update,

If you want a good training ride the week before, you can enter this one in VA Beach. Its free (you can donate to a Cancer cause if you want to, however)

Was thinking about riding the TdC, but I've had an offer to go to Balticon the following weekend. The hotel there is about a mile from the south end of the North Central Trail, so I plan to ride it towards York, PA on one of the weekend mornings.

Maybe next year.
