For me, if one can't cite sources, its irrelevant at best.

Again, the whole POINT of this thread is that older guys can go fast. Fast enough to hang on the fast group rides at any rate. And maybe surprise a few younger guys every now and again. Which is quite inspiring to a 48 year old trying to get fast again after a long layoff.
I don't feel so old now. Not at all. Hell, I won't even be 50 until late next year.
All you young fast guys are in big trouble. Well, OK maybe not in trouble. But just TRY to get rid of me this summer. It won't be as easy as it was last year. That's for sure.
And as much as one of these kids pissed me off with a comment last Fall, all that did was give me a bulletin board motivator for my entire off season weight lifting program. That's NOTHING compared to how pissed off this moron will be when he can't ride me off his wheel this Spring. I'm REALLY looking forward to that.

We're on the hill at the end of the first lap and I pull up next to him. He looks over and asks; "How you feeling?"
I answer "fine" and up the pace a little. Then a little more. Then a little more. Then he blows. I waited for him for a little bit but noticed the rest of the pack closing, so I took off.
Halfway through the last lap I flat my front. No time to change, so I keep riding. Kid catches me and I skate around holding his wheel, nearly rolling the tire in a hairpin.
Finishing hill I'm thinking about letting him take the win, but the old "You can't turn a shark into a minnow" thing raises it's head as I pull up next to him.
He looks over at the front tire and shakes his head.
(ka chunk ka chunk ka chunk ka chunk)
I kick the pace up. So does he and he starts to get that fish out of water look.
(whapachunk whapachunk whapachunk)
Then a little more. Finish line in sight...
(CHUNKCHUNKCHUNKCHUNKCHUNK)
Beat him by a bike length.
Had to stifle a giggle when I congratulated him on a good race. He won the rest of the races and the series so I didn't feel too bad about taking that one win away.

Last weekend I raced in a Master 35+ 4/5 RR (I'm 55) and came in 9th out of about 45. This was my first race as a 4. I thought the pace was too slow so I made a couple of attacks just to stir things up. A group of 8 of us managed to stay alway for about 10 miles before being reeled back in. After that I sat in and waited until the uphill finish before making a move.

I was so upset this weekend. A friend and I were both climbing Mt. Soledad here in San Diego. We were huffing and puffing up this hill when this old grey haired dude about 60 something passed us like we were standing still.

I like the inspiring old guy race stories. Keep 'em coming.
Once you hit 45 and you're trying to ride bikes fast, you need all the inspiration you can get : ).
