Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UPS box was empty (No Fork)=Sad

I wonder how many of you have ordered something online and received an empty box?
The online retailer said that they would do everything possible to get me my Ouzo Pro. UPS delivered a fully sealed Reynolds box without the fork I ordered. I don't want to speak ill of the vendor until he has had a chance to redeem himself. It has only been 8 hours, but the feeling of dread still lingers.

It's one of those new, lighter-than-air forks.

I hope you get it resolved quickly.

one reason to deal with the LBS, you either walk out with your purchase, or if you order and if it goes wrong its easier to get your hard earned dollah bills back!

Keep us updated!

The vendor indicated that he would be pursuing the claim with UPS and that I should not be concerned. In regards to my local bike shop, they were consumed by the almighty "Performance Inc."

One thing you should check out is the weight listed on the label of the delivered box. If the package or box only weighted a 1 lb it was most likely shipped from the on-line store empty. (without a fork) If the weight listed on the UPS label as 2 or 3 lbs then it had a fork in it when it left the on-line bike shop and UPS will have to figure out where it went.

Weight the box the way it was delivered. Does it weight 2 lbs? At 2 lbs my guess it had a fork in it when it left the bike shop. I ship items through UPS all the time and they will cover the loss but I would make the seller deal with them. They will have better luck dealing with UPS then a private party. If you have problems with them PM me and I can give you some angles to go at them.

Hope that gets taken care of...did the package look like it had been opened at all...you said it was sealed, did it look like an original tape job?

The box had been shipped from Reynolds and opened by the vendor then shipped to me. I can only hope that the vendor comes through.

I recently bought a Cannondale Carbon fork on Ebay that weighed all of 265 grams, yet the Shipping label said 2 pounds. Many online sellers use a minimum shipping weight to cover their cost of packaging(box, bubble wrap, tape etc.)They put the weight into their shipping software , even though they know the item doesn't weigh 2 pounds.

How does looking at the label prove anything? Whenever I print out a UPS shipping label, the weight on it is what I typed onto the form. The shipper could have typed in 30lb and UPS wouldn't care - it just means increased shipping costs to the shipper.

I had the same problem, I received an empty tube. But the ebay jerk at the other end, (gearhead something or other) never resolved it with UPS. Whatever you do, KEEP THAT BOX. And the seller MUST deal with UPS. You can't. I tried and UPS told me, the seller has the contract with UPS, not you the buyer. I don't know what you paid for the fork, but UPS automatically insures for a minimum amount, I think it's $100. Maybe someone else knows the amount. I hope your situation turns out better than mine did.

But don't you think that some on-line sellers weight the boxes they are shipping? I ship boxes through UPS every week and I weight every one before printing the label. Why guess and pay more then you have to? All I'm interested in is seeing if the box might have been empty (by mistake or from theft) when it came into the on-line bike shop's shipping deptment.

Hating? Not hating at all. Just telling the truth. Just refer to the cop thread to prove my point. What's the matter, upset that you got called out as an ignoramus?

This is completely true. A buddy of mine worked for UPS and actually went through and audited companies that tried to rip them off this way. He would recover in excess of $15,000 lost to shipping fraud each week.

And in other news...you didn't pay via paypal did you? If you did you are hosed in their system because all the seller has to do is deliver a package...as long as you received a box paypal considers the deal done and you can't get them to reverse the charges.

and you don't get nailed for shipping...I love these on-line outlets that show shipping costs tied to the price of your purchase.

No...some are actually turning a profit on certain items. Like a $300 set of carbon bars and a $300 fluid trainer would actually get the same shipping cost in the "on-line" bike shop world. If you look at "shipping costs" in a lot of these websites, note they do many by the purchase price.

If it's on a credit card you have recourse. If you don't get this resolved quickly, as soon as your credit card statement comes in (there are time limits) give your credit card issuer written notice that you dispute the charge.

Update- The Vendor has made arrangements for Reynolds to ship a replacement fork to me directly. It should be delivered next week. I don't have a tracking number or shipping bill of lading. I will keep my fingers crossed. This seems to be a case of theft in UPS' system.
