Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Comatose51,

I wouldn't feel too bad about the 9 year old that beat you. She rode the 44 mile last year and past my wife and dad and didn't ever get tired enough to stop talking. She will be a very good rider in the near future. By the way, what were you wearing. I saw several teams of two where one rider was always waiting for the slower rider. I guess if you ride with someone you are either slowed down or are slowing the other rider down. That's why I ride tandem with my wife. I always finish just seconds faster than she does.

Also the official count was 370+ riders. The ladies that put it on (I know several personaly) were very pleased with the turnout. And if you wear the shirt you are advertising for my dad (Tommy Evans Firestone).

Look forward to seeing some of you at Mt Vernon. I will do the 80 even if I am so slow that the rest stops shut down. I need the training for the MS150 2 weeks later.

I had a Yale cycling jersey on. I needed to counter-act all the Baylors out there and get mad poser points. Too bad I was so damn slow, completely destroyed the pose.

I'll be doing the Houston-Austin MS150 in 3 weeks. Is that the one you're doing? It's April 22nd right?

What's the Mt. Vernon ride?

Comatose51,

Yea, I am doing the Houston to Austin ride on the 22nd.

The Mt Vernon ride I was refering to was the Tour de Cypress (see link in first post). It is probably 20 miles further down I-30. I will be staying in Sulphur Springs with my family so it is convienent. The 80 mile route is stated to be a race while the 37 and 45 mile routes are the tours. The 45 mile route is one of the prettiest rides I have done. It is around Lake Cypress Springs with some light climbing (more than the SS ride). Only a small group of riders (~20) did the long ride (includes the 37 mile and 45 mile routes)last year and they were mostly from teams in Dallas. The long ride started at 7:30 last year but was moved to 8:45 this time to get better turnout from the Dallas riders. I imagine that some of the rest stops will be closed by the time I finally get to some of them at the end of the ride. I will have a cell phone and my family will be nearby if I need anything. It should be great training for the MS150. Let me know if you plan on going and maybe we can try to ride together.

Anyone else notice that Tour de Cypress seems to get a new webiste every year with a new web address - thus making it hard to find this year's via Google?

Anyways - weather permitting I will be there on the 8th. Part of me is fearing those hills, other parts of me are looking forward to the challenge. Hope to meet up with everyone headed out that direction at least pre-ride. Looks like the 80mi group is headed out 15mins ahead so doubeful that I'll make up that much time those doing that ride before the route splits.

The Austin-Houston MS150 is far too early in the year for me, and I'm getting married during the Dallas-Fort Worth one this year. Perhaps next year I'll make doing one of them my end of college goal. This year I hope to do as many organized rides as I have time and entry money for. Probably sticking to 45-50mi rides till June. Hope to do the 100k Tour di Italia. After that - I'll play it by how strong I'm feeling then.

Cuda,

Actually the 80 mile route starts by going on the 37 mile loop and then goes to the 45 mile loop. If you are riding the 45 mile loop then we will be behind you. You may get past by the racers (we were last year) but I for sure want catch you. If you stay and eat the burgers at the end of the ride really slow, you may be able to see me creep across the finish.

Looks like the 80 mile route is for racers only?!?

Please select a category:*
80 mile Racers (4/8/2006 8:45:00 AM) $25.00
45 mile open (4/8/2006 9:00:00 AM) $25.00
36 mile open (4/8/2006 9:00:00 AM) $25.00
10 mile family ride (4/8/2006 9:30:00 AM) $25.00

I guess we could sign up and come in last! We'd be the only 'racers' stopping at the rest stops

I'd like to make a full day of it, but hope jsharr will be joining me and he'll probably need to be headed back to Dallas not too long after we finish up the 45miles. I was at one of the rest stops during Spring Fever when the front of the 66mi pack came rolling through. Very impressive to see the pacelines roaring by - with the EMS close in tow. I maintained my 14-18mph in the generally flat course - though I did drop the hammer for the last quarter mile.

TheCahill and I were playing an interesting game for the first half of the Spring Fever route. Each downhill he'd downshift and pass me - on each uphill I'd breeze by him. In fact on the cross over I30 at the beginning I gave him "The Look" with an additional little laugh. I think that's what kicked off our little game. When we turned back to the North though - and uphill and chipseal was really beating Cahill up he faded a bit. I think he learned his lesson about 20mm tires and rural Texas roads though.

eventphotographyassociates.com has their Spring Fever photos posted. Here's probably the best one of me: https://www.eventphotographyassociate...s/6288-597.htm

I also have my full review of the ride posted on my website (link in signature).

10-day outlook looks good for Tour de Cypress, not so good for this weekend's Tour Dallas or the attempted reschedule of the BF's ride.

Dude, the toe warmers and gloves really make that picture POP! Without them it is just another guy on a bike.

@ jsharr. Here is my offical public thank you to you for letting me borrow said toe covers and gloves. They made the ride much more enjoyable especially over the first 20-25miles. Hopefully we won't need them for the Tour de Cypress. Tomorrow the 8th will be in the 10-day outlook. Time to start making offerings to the weather gods. They seem to be in a 50/50 - hit and miss - now you get rain, or no you don't - kind of mood.

I was considering Aledo but don't think I'm going to make it out there. Have a good ride out there.

Spring Fever ride photo from Bicycle-Stuff / Texas-Cycling.com (big shout out to John who runs the site. Cahill and I had the pleasure of meeting him before the ride as we were gearing up at the truck.) Cahill and I are in the first two photos - and of course there are some 100 photos total over the route. Photos like these make me feel not so bad about not taking so many photos of my own.

I'm doing Tour de Cypress. About 2h out of Dallas - but from the reviews, the elevation via google routes and the fact I spent a good part of my childhood out there it will be VERY worth it. Beautiful scenery, a good challenge going up some of those hills. After rocking on some of the hills around here I think I'm going to get a bit of a reality check on those, but certainly up for the challenge!

I'll be rolling on the Gazelle in my Peloton Pale Ale jersey. There's about a 99.99999% chance I'll be the only one out there on a Gazelle so if you spot it - say hello.
