Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thin racing tires need a higher pressure = narrow pump. Fat tires need fatter pumps that give larger volumes at lower pressures. If a local library has back issues of BICYCLING I would start there. For the price of some high end pumps you could get a motorized pump at an auto parts store and save the effort. When my old schrader floor pump hose wore out my LBS sold me a replacement hose with a head that handles both Presta and Schrader valves and threw in two hose clamps.

I like my Serfas FP50

Anything over $30 will probably work fine, unless you have some crazy tubular tires that need ridiculous pressures. Just about all pumps nowadays handle presta/schrader.

Do check presta/schrader valve type before you buy, most will handle both.
My choice has been Blackburn for both floor and frame-fit pumps. They do the job and I don't spend any time thinking about them.

I picked up a Park PFP-3 pump from eBay a few weeks ago, $27.95 with free shipping. Arrived in three days, brand new with Park tags still on it. A great pump for home use, built in gauge, pumps to 160psi and completely rebuildable. Here's a link to another one he has:
