Nervous b4 a race; will it affect performance?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nervous b4 a race; will it affect performance?

Halo,

I'm wondering will it hinder my performance if I'm nervous(butterflies in tummy, a little cold hands) b4 the race begins?

TQ!

I've never raced without butterflies so I couldn't say.

Possibly if its your first time in a racing environment. It's all mental, just learn to relax. I haven't raced yet, but I remember being nervous my first time at the plate. After that, I was itching to be up next. The same will apply to cycling, you will be more excited than nervous.

unless the anxiety is so bad that it's incapacitating, then I say some adrenalin helps

Normal. Usually dissipates after the gun goes off.

Don't allow it to cause you to put a death grip on your bars. And don't let it turn into stress.
Establish your pre-race routine and get comfortable with it. This is going to happen every weekend. Don't be a basketcase.

exactly. You tend not to feel nervous when you HR is at 195bpm, and you're puffing your guts out.

Sounds fine.

You're nerves should settle down once you find you're normal pre-race routine. Then you're nerves will turn into boredom as you sit in the hot sun, drinking your water, while they try to move that last car off the course. "C'MON ... LET'S GO!"

Some people go too fast at the start with so much adrenaline; make sure you don't burn yourself out in the first 10% of the race.

The more often you race the less it will bother you.

And like ElJam said - don't let it make you go off too fast. Have a plan and stick with it.

I've never raced with out being nervous (been racing for 7 or 8 years now). Like everyone else has said, once the race starts you'll be fine.

Well OK,

I read that if you're nervous our stomach temporarily shuts down.. maybe that's what causes the butterflies.. So should I eat the powerbar 30 minutes b4 the race?..

im always anxious but not necessarily nervous. i was nervous on my first fast group descent though when everybody was seriously bombing the hill. not sure where you live, but there are ALOT of Cat 4 racers in Portland that are racing well below their skill level and should upgrade to Cat 3 and they know it
