Luckily no pedestrians appeared to be hurt in that video. The cyclists filmed clearly had no regard for them.

None of those cyclists killed last year in NYC were messengers.

Just because somebody does something dangerous for money doesn't make it any better. Think of a prostitute, very dangerous work and it pays their bills; but it’s not ok. They risk their lives for a couple bucks, over and over.

Who says it's not ok?....... actually a small percentage of the world.
They don't HAVE to do it for the money, but they do HAVE to do it for the good money.
And don't forget about the rush, something non-messengers will NEVER understand, unless adrenaline is somewhat of a controlled substance in their lives.

GREAT VIDEO!

Playing in traffic is a huge thrill!

We used to train in downtown San Diego like that. Great prep for college crits.

That is just a normal day in NYC. I still ride like that around cars, between a bus and a Limo, dodging Taxi's ---its par for the course. Except now I am much more careful around the humans on two feet and their dogs and charges, but hell, 21 yrs ago as a bike messanger--well I had no fear what-so ever. Only grazed one pedestrian (when I was 18 then I learned my lesson he was unharmed but very mad)
Been to E.R. a few times though.... maybe five times. That crap gets exspensive. Over the years you get smarter/slower in equal proportions.

Understood. Yet the attitude many motorists and many LEOs have about bikes is colored by this kind of way-outside-the-edges riding. There's more be-kind-to-cyclists traction for all of us when we don't have our daredevil faction charging pedestrians and otherwise making traffic moves that cause everyone reading an article about a city cyclist being run down to dismiss the accident as one of those "'nuther bike punk who got what's coming" stories.

Good info to know. I wonder how many of those race participants are messengers.
