Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmets and Crashing

Well, it finally happened.

I was riding along with some friends slowly on a bike path that just turned into a park road. I had a high end ITM fork on my Look. The fork was improperly made and one side fell off causing the other side to break off. I fell straight forward onto my face. The helmet never even touched.

I received severe brain injuries breaking some sort of gland in my forehead area that allows "real" conciousnessl. The emergency hospital treated the relatively minor cosmetic injuries to my face and never bothered to check for anything worse.

Without those hormones from those glands I had no short term memory and hence no long term memory. I was essentially sleep walking.

For six months I was getting into all sorts of trouble including drunk driving and I normally only drink perhaps a glass or two of wine with dinner occasionally when I'm not driving!!!

Finally some friends called my brother who took me to a neurologist who prescribed the drugs Levetiracetam and Aricept. The day after starting those drugs I "woke" up.

I am utterly destroyed. The legal problems are overwhelming and it appears that I will soon be in financial ruin. ITM went bankrupt long ago so I cannot turn to them. I can't find any lawyer interested in going after the emergency hospital for not treating me properly.

Let this be a lesson at what can happen to you. Perhaps there's some sort of insurance policy you could buy that would help in such a case?
