Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am just new to road biking (converted from mountain biking) and was wondering the top speed that everone has reached:
On the flats
With a hill

Okay, so I'm a wimp.

I've hit maybe 28-29 MPH on the flat, and around 50 MPH on a descent.

Hmm... looks like i need to find steeper hills...

Flats- 31.9
Hill- 38.2

that 31.9 was actually going slightly uphill... somehow... i'm really not sure how i pulled that off.

With a computer or by dead reckoning?

I find that the added weight and wind drag of a computer takes a good 8-10 mph of my speeds.

How many times has this thread been started? 28520846509352 times I think...

...and yet every time I post my speed.

58.0 MPH on an 11% downgrade. I hit 58 and developed a shimmy. I've experienced the dreaded speed wobble before, but not nearing 60mph. I haven't had an adrenaline rush like that in a long time.

I want to try breaking 58mph on that hill again, but next time on a bike that's not so prone to wobble.

On a 10+ plus straight decent ... 61 MPH... scared for my life...

Average fast decent... 45 MPH

On flats, solo 28 MPH (in a crit) maintained for 6 minutes, in a pack 33 MPH, in a sprint (15 seconds, 26 MPH)...

Very subjective question, and asked 50+ times~

I cannot fathom how u giys can approach speeds of 60mph or more on a descent without drafting. I've hammered full speed down moderate slopes and not got much beyond 40mph. The wind resistance becomes horrendous over about 35mph.

I guess it must be the severity of slope that counts most.

55.8 mph going downhill

Flat, not sure.....but yesterday I maintained 31-32 mph on a rare flat stretch for a couple minutes solo with a very slight tailwind. Slowed up as I didn't want to toast myself for a slight climb afterwards....but that was fun flying along at those speeds.

On the flats 36 MPH, but on a hill I got up to 68 MPH. This was the scariest adventure in my life and will never be attempted again.

Down a Colorado canyon: 62mph.
On the flats: who cares? After going 62mph, the flats feel slow all the time.

95kms or 59.0300916 mph on a white knuckle descent in Vermont which I still to this day call the best ride of my life, where four of us in full tuck whipped past a lone car. 50ish kms on flats and more than likely not maintained for a long time.

Hill w/ wind to my back on our tandem:

38mph.

Too skeered to go much over that. All I can think about is my fork disintegrating while I'm hauling arse.
