Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: The kind with two wheels

Something ironic about a nice bike being propped up by those chairs......

Hmmm...go ride? Just sit?

I *really* wanted a Record Gruppo, but the jump in price was astronomical-- I'd be paying almost double what I paid for this set up. I'm in it strictly for fun & exercise, so I couldn't justify a 5200.00 bike vs. this 3200.00 setup.

Plus, the savings will allow me to start restoring the old beast, an '86 Cannondale crit frame.

I'm particularly fond of the saddle. Not only does it coordinate with the rest of the bike but it's a Selle Italia Flite which I consider one of the most comfortable saddles available. You'll enjoy that ride.

Nice bike. If anyone lives in the Chicago area, you might want to check this 54" deal out... I think they have one left. I recently bought a bike there, but the store I went to did not have this bike (Harrison). Check the other three.....

Yea the Campeon is Scandium with a CF seat stay and CF fork. The Goma tape is great...nice and tacky even when wet....I use it on my Roubaix.

Thanks mister.... actually the patio is brandnew, and the area behind it (which looks like the Calicax family lives here) is destined to be flowerbeds.

So...if I understand Salsa correctly, they're all special order deals...so how did you measure and test-ride?

Well they aren't custom but most shops don't carry too many of them. Salsa is a division of QBP who is one of the largest bicycle part wholesalers in the country so just about any LBS can order you Salsa parts, front a chain ring, to tape, to a frame.

I think I had a unique situation. The guy who built up my bike as well as sold it to me used to run his own "We'll come to you" bike repair service-- he had a whole repair shop on a truck and would wheel up, work on your bike, and be on his way. He also was a rep for Salsa. One day out on a ride I started taking pulls at the front with a guy who had a *really* nice Salsa with full Record gruppo. He was raving about the bike as well as the service he got with this fellow so I looked him up. Recently he's been hired to be the Service Manager at a local LBS.

I got to ride a couple different setups that he had laying around, both his own bikes and some which were waiting for customers-- I knew my frame size as wel as several other necessary sized from an old fit kit. I still have to do the initial adjustment setup with this bike though, when I have a few hours to spare.

Little update: did a 20 mile 'shakedown' ride yesterday with plenty of stops and starts as I fiddled with adjustements. As I suspected, I will have to switch out the 100 mm stem for a 110. Other than that, a very comfortable ride.

I was impressed on standing hill climbs at the lively feel without any sense of squirreliness.

These new fangled brifters will take some getting used to (I know, welcome to the 21st century). All I've ever known is DT shifters.

Oh and finally, I know it was a short ride but the seat really was extremely comfortable.

Ummm, Scandium . . . stiff and rigid as a steel bar. Pretty and nice and light. I'm looking around for a 31.6 CF seatpost for my Salsa.

I'm not a big fan of cf seatpost...I have a thomson on my salsa...thats seatpost to get.

bunabayashi, congrats on the bike. I've had my bike for a couple of years...it's light, but at about 3 pounds for the frame, it is not the lightest. there are also lighter forks out there. don't be fooled by the carbon seatstays, its not going to soften the rear...but put together right, the campeon is pretty sweet ride. I have mine set up for climbing...really wide bars and a compact crank. the other thing about this bike that makes it sweet ride is how well it decends!
