Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wind Training!!

It was windy today!! The gusts were up over 50 km/h (31 mph) and it was great to be riding in those conditions again!!! ..... I've gotten out of practice since I moved to this part of the country.

I'm used to 50 km/h winds all spring, with a day or so each week up around 70-80 km/h (44-50 mph). If the wind happened to drop below 30 km/h (19 mph) it was a calm day.

I got so used to riding in wind that if I could ride into a headwind and still maintain a speed over 20 km/h (12.4) mph, I figured there was hardly any wind at all that day.

But then I moved here, and last year was, for the most part, completely and utterly calm!! I think there might have been a couple days where the wind got anywhere near 50 km/h ... and I found myself complaining when it did.

However, it looks like this spring could be windier than last ... I can get used to it again!

So ... what are the winds like where you are?

I rode this morning and had about 20 miles straight into a 20-25 mph gusty wind. Turned around looking forward to the ride back and flatted 5 miles later. I had to get a ride home because some idiot (me) removed his wedge bag last night and forgot to put it back on the bike before he left this morning.

the wind speed has dipped below 10mph avg once or twice the last month here. plenty of days where the average was over 20mph. 30-40mph gusts regularly.

The wind here in the Illinois flatlands has been a steady, unrelenting 20mph straight on from West-East for 3 days. I did 15 miles right into it today, and I was a slug today after 2 days of customer entertainment, read, "boozing it up" at the Cardinals game. I kept up 20mph into the wind for a while, the only thought that kept me pushing was knowing that when I turned around I could fly!!!

Machka, I did a 100 km trip from Cambridge to London on Thursday, and it was phenomenal how strong the south-westerlies were. I wish I had chosen a more diagonal route, but I mostly took east-west routes for the most part. A ride that I've done in 4.5 hours took 6 hours that day! What region are you in?

I used to live in Manitoba ... that's where 50 km/h winds for a couple months in the spring were quite normal, and that's where I learned how to ride in the wind. They don't have hills there, so when I left Manitoba I didn't have a clue how to climb a hill ... but put me in a good strong headwind and I was right at home.

Now I live in Alberta where the only wind we get are the chinooks blowing in and out, it's pretty calm in between. However, now I've got hills and I'm working on learning how to climb them.

But I still prefer wind over hills.

Every Spring, it seems like I am always riding against the wind. Once the lazy days of summer get here, it's like being on a "riding vacation".

Oh, how I hate wind! I grew up in the Oak Ridges Moraine area in Southern Ontario, and now that I'm in South-Western Ontario for school the terrian is desolately flat, it truly is unbearable. I'd take a hill over wind anyday.
