Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal Help

I have read so many posts about pedals I am getting dizzy.

I know I want shoes I can walk in, that means MTB or Lake touring if I remember correctly.

What pedal options am I left with knowing these are the type of shoes I will be getting?

Everybody has a favorite, I want something good, but I don't race so I don't want to go overboard in price. Shimano A520, Shimano Ultegras?? All suggestions welcome.

Best value is the cheapest Shimano or Crank Brothers MTB pedals (maybe $50) along with any MTB or touring shoes that fit you well ($40 to $100, depending on how hard your feet are to fit).

Shimano SPDs work well for that.

Lake's touring shoe will use just about any two bolt(SPD, Eggbeater) or delta pattern cleat (LOOK, SPD-SL).

I just got a pair of Shimano A520s (since you mention them specifically), which can be had for around $50. The major reason you might not like them is that they're single-sided. This doesn't bother me, since most of my clipless experience has been on "campus" pedals (SPD one side, platform on the other), but it may bother you. I've only ridden them about 50 miles so far, but I like them a lot so far. The small platform has alleviated the foot numbness I was getting from the double-sided M505's I had before, and I've been pleasantly surprised at how rarely the wrong side of the pedal is up when I'm trying to clip in (something that I'm accustomed to with the campus pedals on my hybrid, but was hoping not to experience too much on my road bike).
