Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rubbish! Everyone knows that 55 and Rad are two different people.

What's your favorite kind of pie? I'm a Boston Cream man, but I do have a soft spot for Banana Cream as well.

It seems to have stirred up some good old fashioned discussion.... we all know that comparisons are in the eye of the beholder, but this provided a nice little outlet for discussion on Big Mig's career.

Not looking for a war of words here. I just think enough folks on this forum look up to you and your opinions and that posting a recipe amidst some good conversation only encourages such behavior.

Just my take, that's all.

PS Rad.. ... if you feel EURO's sig is a slight on your presence and character (which I agree with you), then let a mod know, eh?

I always find at least some value in Rads posts. Same cannot be said for Ben and his incendiary devices. "Worthless" is subjective anyhow, so this was a perfect counter to the OP.

i wasn't referring to personality. i was referring to his racing style; here's a big, big dude who just goes out there and blows everyone away - even in the mountains - but you don't know a thing about him because he's near silent.

again, i wasn't trying to say that Indurain didn't have a good team or that Armstrong wasn't a great rider physically; i was trying to make a point that Indurain was a great rider first and team-supported tactician second, while Armstrong was the reverse.

you don't win any grand tour without a strong grasp of strategy. which i stated in my first post.

uh huh... and Lance just psyched out all of the competition, right?
Lance didn't win because he "psyched out" the competition. he won because of canny control of team strategy that allowed him to play to his physical strengths. Indurain was less of a micromanager and more of a physical athlete.

once again, i'm not saying Lance was less of an athlete. just that they had different ways of attacking the race.

OK, who we talking about here? Indurain or Armstrong, or Hinault, or Merckx, or LeMond for that matter?
it's a question of emphasis. Indurain used the time trials to win the TdF, while defending in the mountains. Lance attacked in both, and revolutionized team tactics as well. Hinault was a star who ran the entire peloton, not just his team. Merckx "just" attacked constantly. and Lemond arguably had to ride against his team in 1986 to beat Hinault.

to win the TdF, you need to be a great rider and use racing tactics to your best advantage - but no one does it the same way.

Mincemeat is a mixture of finely chopped apples, raisins, spices, meat, and sometimes rum or brandy, used especially as a pie filling.

Tasty...

Hmmm... Apple pie. With a buttery crust. All that brown sugar and cinnamon. Baked to golden perfection in a brown paper bag. Drool.

Mincemeat Filling (yields 3 qts)

1/2 lb beef suet, chopped fine
4 cups seedless raisins
2 cups dried currants
1 cup coarsely chopped almonds
1/2 cup coarsely chopped candied citron
1/2 cup coarsely chopped dried figs
1/2 cup coarsely chopped candied orange peel
1/4 cup coarsely chopped candied lemon peel
4 cups coarsely chopped, peeled and cored cooking apples
1 & 1/4 cups sugar
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
2 & 1/2 cups brandy
1 cup dry sherry
Combine the suet, raisins, currants, almonds, citron, figs, orange peel, lemon peel, apples, sugar, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and cloves in a large mixing bowl and stir them together thoroughly.

Pour in the brandy and the sherry and stir with a large spoon until all the ingredients are moist.

Cover the bowl and set the ingredients aside in a cool place (do not refrigerate) for at least 3 weeks. Check the mixture each week and replenish the absorbed liquor with more brandy and sherry, using about 1/4 cup each time.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Place about 3 tbsp of mincemeat into each pastry shell and cover with sheet of pastry, crimping the edges with a fork.

Place the stuffed pies on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Let pies cool then remove from tin and serve with whipped cream or Brandy Butter.
I don't have brandy on hand. Would bitters work as a substitute?

If you look at the post of Indurain's palmares, it breaks out stage wins as seperate wins. Whereas Armstrong's list collects multiple stage wins in parenthesis, making it look shorter. Also Indurain's palmares include placings, some as low as 17th. If you took all Armstrong's seconds, thirds fourths, his lsit would be much longer than the one posted. If you compare overall wins, and stage wins, based on the 2 posts its 97 Armstrong , 98 Indurain. If yo

TdF champions peak around age 30, so a 29 year old passing a 22 year old is hardly a meaningful comparison.

True. But if you notice who initiated this particular comparison, nothing 'meaningful' was probably ever intended, hence the food discussion offered instead to pacify those who ventured in hungry for debate
