Can anyone give me some suggestions for low cost computers for my bike? Sub $100, the cheaper the better as I dont need anything too fancy or complicated.

I currently use the Cateye Astrale 8, it has been very solid so far and it is onsale at performancebike.com! The only feature that I wish I had was the total climbing, that would sure be handy!

I've used many different computers and I've been most pleased with the Cateye Mighty/Enduro/Astralle series of computers. I've also just gotten one of the new Specialized branded computers and it's GREAT! And, they're not expensive at all.

If you want fancy but not complicated, I've got a HAC 4 for sale I'll send it out for 100 bucks. The HAC4 is also an HRM.

always kept it simple except for a vetta hr1000 (i think that's what the model name was). it was handy having a HRM and computer on the same bike, unfortunately the HRM only really worked for one season.
I now have a flightdeck. Love it! within your budget if bought off of ebay.

+1 for Cateye, inexpensive, reliable, and great Customer Service.
I've owned 3, 2 Astral 8's and a Mity 8. I wish my Mity had cadence but I wasn't up to wiring it on my beater bike like I did on my tourers.

I"m using Cateyes on all my bike. Great computers never any issues in rain, snow, hail and tumbling down the road when I forgot to attach it properly. Like all things a little slow when changing functions in freezing condition, but never stoped or missed a beat.

The only one that I have used is the Echowell F2. It runs somewhere around 40 USD and displays cadence, average cadence, and max cadence. It is also pretty darn weather resistant. The only weakness I have found in the unit I have (2+ years old) is the 'straps' that hold the sensors to the bike aren't the strongest. Electrical tape works just fine, though.
God bless!

If you ride your bike on a trainer, keep in mind that most of the wireless computers have their sensors on the front wheel, which renders it useless when used on a trainer. There are a number of wireless computers w/ cadence that use rear-wheel sensors, but they sell for approximately 3x the cost of a wired w/ cadence. I use the Cateye Astrale 8, which is very cheap and works well. My only complaint is that the letters to indicate which mode is displayed are quite small and hard to read when it's on my trainer in the TV room.

Planet Bike Protege 9.0 - it can be had for around $25 with some web searching. Weatherproof, fairly large 4-line display (so no pushing buttons all the time), easy to install (it's wired not wireless), easy to use. The battery in mine went two full seasons and part of this one, but I finally got nervous it'd conk out and lose my mileage, so I finally changed it a couple weeks ago. So I'm going on my third year with it and it's been great.

Cadence is really the main feature to buy a computer for. Racing/training without cadence would be like motorcycle or car road racing without a tachometer. Doesn't really matter what your absolute speed is, its how fast your legs are turning thats important. Total miles is good too. Unfortunately, most basic computers don't have cadence, its an add-on or available with a higher priced product.

Second the recommendation for the Cateye Astrale 8. (Also the Red Sox! ) The Astrale has a rear wheel speed sensor, so you can easily use it on a stationary trainer as well as on the road. My only wish list for it would be a center/stem mount (Cateye may sell one separately - need to check).

Go on ebay and find a Mavic Wintech ES with cadence.

I have one of the cheapest Cateyes, the Velo 5. If all you want is speed and distance it's great but if i was buying a new one, I'd get one with elapsed time.

And yes, you can buy a stem mount - they're like $19.99, I think. Not worth it in my opinion.
Great computer though, can't go wrong with it.

Beh, cateye. Uncessarily expensive, go pick up a MEC wired computer $15. Multi line display, big easy to read.
Wireless will always suffer from interference.

Since no one has chimed in yet with Sigma...
Inexpensive product line with several model selections depending on features -- most are under $30 in price. I have a different Sigma on each of my bikes. They do the job. As was pointed out earlier, a computer with cadence is going to cost you more.

It has two pages of info. Some MEC stores are also selling a slightly more expensive version with cadence (still under $25)

I'm happy with my Cateye Astrale 8. It has cadence as well as the other features to help you analyze your ride. Anybody know why I can't find the clock on mine, though? As for wireless, I decided to stay away from that just in case it gets interference (in LA, everything is emitting a radio signal it seems), but it probably works fine too.
