Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What would you do to your stable with $1500

Shallow post, I know, but, I've got 3 road bikes and a mountain bike already. My wife is pretty adimant about me NOT getting another bike (understandably). I'm thinking of maybe replacing the Trek 1500, but with so many choices these days, nothing is standing out at me right now. Usually when I make a decision, it's because I knew the answer instantaneously the moment I saw it. What new frames/bikes have you folks seen lately that turned you on?

If nothing's nagging you right now...

Why don't you save your money for later?

Because, without a doubt, later it will be spent on property taxes, a new laptop, curio cabinet, BBQ grill, or something like that. And let's face it, none of those things rank very high on the excite-O-meter, except maybe the grill.

Even if I do a race and don't place as well as I would have liked, I can look and say well I held X watts for longer or whatever...In the end it will actually save me a bit of money instead of doing performance tests in the lab to monitor changes. Now I can do some self tests on the road and get similar data.

I think the SRM's cost several $k. However, the Ergomo's are in the $1600 range, and powertaps
can be had for anywhere from a few hundred to just over $1.2k depending on which model you get and what rim you pick.

I personally like the powertap so I can move the wheel between my bikes or put it on friend's bike if they would like to test themslves.

$1500 of parts or $1500 for a new bike?

$1500 of parts:
$150 Another strong training wheelset, 105 hubs/Mavic CXP22/32 3-cross DT spokes front and rear
$600 a very nice DT hub / Velocity Aerohead / expensive spoke wheelset from Mike Garcia, sub-1550g
$110 - two new 105 12-27 cassettes and two new SRAM nine speed chains
$65 - another seatbag, co2 head, cartridges, multitool, etc for my second bike
$40 - two more sets of spare cleats
the rest of the money to be spent on travel, century registration fees,

$1500 for a whole bike, I'd probably buy a Pedal Force QS2 frame ($650), a $600 wheelset as mentioned above, and spend $300 on other upgrades... and swap the rest of the parts over from my Specialized.

Do you have a set of nice light wheels on your main road bike? If not, I'd go for a set of nice high-end wheels.

Find a good used or older NIB Ti frame and build up a 10 Speed Full Ultegra, Full Ritchey WCS bike. I did it for 1380 and it's the bomb. It'll be the best 1500 or less that you ever spent.

Surly Cross Check frame (62cm) built up with a generator hub on the front and a 8 speed Nexus red line on the back. Triple butted spokes, 35 or 38 tires, kevlar belted. B17 saddle, and Nitto Noodle.
