Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Road Bike

I am new to cycling. I just bought a raod bike from a "Wal Mart" type bike shop in Denver.

It is a Lemond Tornamat. I am 6'2" I was sold a 59cm bike. It was a huge sale almost a circus like atmosphere. My problem now is where do I set the seat and handle bars? The sales staff seemed so busy there was no one to talk to. I hope I bought the right size bike. The price was right

The size should be close, and it's not a bad bike at all.

General rule for setting seat height is to have your leg fully extended with your heal on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke. This should put it so that you have a slight knee bend when you have the pedal properly placed on your foot. You also want the seat set forward/aft so that when you are in the drops, you can't see the front axle because the handlebars are in the way. These are ballpark guidelines, and minor adjustments will give you what's best for you.

Handlebars...ah, the arguement as to whether to have the stem angled up or down will doubtless rage on for centuries. I ride with mine up because it helps keep my knees out of my (shrinking) beer belly.

It is nice to know that people make major purchases with-out doing any research.

Well then take the bike to a reputable bike shop and have it fitted for you.

I'll guess you bought it at Bicycle Village?

If so, regardless of which location, make an appointment with Jerry at the Havana (HQ) location. The guy is awesome. He's a retired cop who loves cycling and lives it. He's been pro-fitting people for (I think) 7 years now and BV pays for him to go to various seminars including ones that aren't directly bike related, sports anatomy stuff or something.

Plus, BV (and probably the shop you bought you bike at, if not BV) offer free fittings, so take advantage of it!

Congo rats on the new ride and have fun!
