Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Choices

Hi All

I know that these sort of questions are asked a lot, so I apologise for being another one. I am after any advice/opinions on a choice of Frame.

I currently have a Pinarello Dogma (not the FP) that I rode for about 12 months before the frame cracked. It was a second hand purchase, so Pinarello won't cover it, the best they will offer me is a new frame at half price ($3,500 AUD). Now for my own reasons, I have decided not to go down this path and I am in the market for a new frame. My maximum budget is about $3,500 AUD, not because that is all I have to spend, but I don't want to spend more than the replacement cost of the Dogma.

I am doing about 10,000km/year on road bikes, and this consists of some racing (a few crits, and opens), but mainly riding "for the hell of it". I do a fair amount of solo riding, but I also ride with groups. Most of this riding is on Sydney roads, which aren't the smoothest, and they often involve a few hills.

So, this isn't a blind question, I have looked and shopped and formed a bit of a short list.

Cervelo Team Soloist - $1,919
Cervelo R3 - $3,459
Cannondale six13 - $3,000
Orbea Onix - $3,000
Look 481 - possibly about $3,500

If I went down the Team Soloist path, I would probably get the Carbon Fibre seat post. About the only bad thing that I have heard about this frame, is that it can be a bit harsh as it is Aluminium, but as I am currently on an old (as in 20 years old) Cannondale SR600, harshness isn't too much of an issue. This is also attractive as it is cheap, and is used by CSC in some races.

The R3 is pretty attractive at that price, but I don't know if I should spend more money, just because it is "shinier".

As far as the Look goes, from what I gather, this is last years "pro" frame. I can get a good deal on this frame, so it would be below the retail price. But I don't know if I should, as I don't know a lot about Look's in general.

So, any comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

James

Go for the Soloist. I've test-ridden one and I was surprised as although it was stiff, it was noticably less harsh on my buttocks than the aluminum bike I have now. A lot cheaper than the others too.

Cervelo is an excellent choice.

If you like the ride of the Dogma and want something less expensive but similar, consider Cannodale Six/13. Last year when I was test riding lots of bike trying to figure out what I wanted to buy, I rode the Dogma. It was really nice but I was surprised how similar it felt to the Connodlae. I really couldn't tell much difference at all, and the Cannondale was alot cheaper. Plus I've rarely heard stories about problems with long term durability.
