Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

HEY!!! I resemble that remark!

So what if a cheese steak fits nicely in the center pocket of a jersey. That would make it central Jersey, wouldn't it? Oh no, here we go again...

A local radio station suggested some "city limit" signs for Philadelphia. Rejected suggestions included "Philly - You Just Stepped In It!" and "Philadelphia: Gateway to Camden!".

I never read a map or Cue sheet on this ride. There are so many people that I just follow the line of colorful jerseys ahead.

You're just a bit uppity cause you are in the absolute CENTER of the state. We are not the CENTER but we are Central part. CENTRAL is kind of a CENTER wanabe.

A Prof a PSU once told me that State College is "Equally inaccessible from any part of the state"

The 50 K is on the same route as the 100K for quite a while, then it breaks off. You can ride with the gang AND your wife.

Yea that's probably true.

Hey that Prof isn't correct anymore. We are very accessible from the east and west via I80 now and the south east and outh west are close with the roads they are trying to finish. Once I99 is done and 322 is widened it may be too easy to get here. Plus less cars means better biking so keep em out I say.

I have a feeling I'll be dead of old age long before they solve the 322 pyrite problem.

Nah that's the I99 pyrite problem. 322 has been going fine as far as I have heard. The section through the Milroy narrows has been completed for a few years now...the 522 bypass around Lewistown and the improvements to 322 to join that are done and now they are hard at work on the section from Millersburg to Lewistown which will connect 322 with 4 lanes the whole way from Harrisburg over 7 mountains then all they need to do is the section from the 322 bypass in Boalsburg to 7 mountains and they will be 4 lanes from the Burg to SC. I99 to Altoona is the big stall with the pyrite, though they have a plan and are supposedly moving forward again. They finally came out and said, hey no one wants the stuff but it has to go some place and this plan is as good as any...deal with it. That had to be done IMO and finally someone had the balls to do it.

Or a box of butterscotch krimpets. I remember well mornings rowing on the Schuylkill with the sweet smell of krimpets wafting over the river while the last night's cheesesteak congealed in my stomach.

I dunno about that, especially judging by all the plastic they've layed on the ground around the new sections of 322 just north of State College. They do that to keep rainwater from leeching the pyrite into the water table. Maybe they've finally figured out what to do, but AFAIK, the 322 project was on hold until they solved the pyrite problem. All they were allowed to do was work on the overpasses and bridges.

I asked about it at work a while ago (I work at the DOT) but my office stops being involved after the planning phase, so no one knew about what was going on now.

All that new road is I99...or it will be when it is done.

I know what you mean. My area is often overlooked (Thankfully). City people say to us "How can you live out in the sticks like that?" And I say "Yea it's bad. Better not move up here!"

Mmmmmm butterscotch krimpets . . . one of my favorites. When I was a kid they were the special thing Mom would get only once in a great while. I used to eat the icing out of the little dents first, cuz it was sort of extra hanging over the sides. Yummmmmm!

I think I figured it out. We think this is Central PA because we're by Harrisburg, and of course the State Capitol must be considered the center of the Commonwealth - right?

And. . . tomorrow morning the family and I are headed out for a long weekend - in PHILLY. Mr. Road is speaking at a conference there Monday morning, so we've decided to tag along and make a weekend of it. Think I'll visit the Manayunk Wall (and certainly the Manayunk Brewery, makes Mr. Road happy). I'll visit my sister, and we have a couple of teenagers who are counting on a nice long day at King of Prussia, so in the midst of all this I'll try to figure out just what part of the state we're actually in. Will report in with pictures of the Wall for anyone who hasn't been there - sadly, I won't have my bike along to try it out.

Later, kids

Beth

No bike? There's a nice trail that runs from Valley Forge (right next to K of P) to Philly!

Unfortunately not this trip. . . we'll only be there Sat. thru Mon., time with the family. I'm itching to ride though. . . with the rain this week I haven't been out since Monday evening (pouting face). Mr. Road wants to leave early tomorrow a.m.. . . maybe I can strike a deal and get a coupla hours in before we go?!

I did that one year during the Princeton Event, unfortunately the cyclists I was following weren't doing that event. Luckily I found a cop and after looking at my cue sheet he gave me directions back to the route. I wonder where I would have ended up if I just kept following them.
