If you don't wear gloves, you don't get that cool tan spot on the back of your hand that marks you as a serious rider.
Seriously, your hands have a ton of nerve endings in them, and it's nice to have some protection on them (though I wear fingerless gloves most of the year).

Eric:
I have a un-cool spot on the back of MY right hand, where I toppled that way (pushed over by a 1" driveway 'ledge' higher than road surface) and slid on the back of hand and rt elbow ... 20+ years ago. Prolly some sand/dirt was embedded in the flesh in addition to skinning it.
I didn't even know it was called "road rash" until I just recently read "Art of Urban Cycling". (I thought road rash was from sweating in your shorts?) I just called it my SCAR. The experience kept me off bicycles until this past week.
I am using, BION, garden gloves with leather (maybe synthetic leather) fingertips, padded palms, and a band of padding across the knuckles -- I didn't chose the latter, just the way they came. I also didn't buy them for cycling, but discovered they fit better than any bike-gloves at four stores.
It's being HOT this week in Orange County CA -- enough so that we have had a red-star weather alert all week from Nat'l Weather Service, no kidding, for the heat! -- So I was somewhat surprised that any extra sweating due to the gloves was made up for by them (apparently) absorbing all sweat.
