Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike storage solutions

I currently live in a smaller downtown two-bedroom apartment, and between my roommate and I, we have about 4 bikes in the apartment. There is one in the living room, one in my bedroom, and two in the narrow hallway. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good stable storage rack or any ideas to better store these bikes? Topeak Dual Bike Stand?

If you put two hooks in the celing you can hang one bike from the wheels and fit another against the wall under it.

one bedroom apt.

This sounds a lot like my apartment except I have a one bedroom. Between my boyfriend and I we have four bikes in the apartment.

Apartment stats:
4 bikes
two people (myself and boyfriend)
2 cats

....It's a very full one bedroom! yikes!

I'm interested in reading what people recommend doing as well...

They have a vertical bike rack that fits 2 bikes at Target, and it's not terribly expensive. Maybe $70 or so? I would check them out.

I have an interesting rack. I don't know if it is made anymore, but I believe it was called a pole cat.

It basically was a pole that worked via friction against the floor and ceiling (like curtain rods do). It had 2 hooks that held the bikes by 1 wheel. That way basically you could store 2 bikes vertically in a very small space. I still use it in my garage. It wouldn't be too hard to make via a DIY project either.

I bought it originally for my dorm room in college.

I found it

And yea I hang my skis from the other hooks that are 90deg to the bikes.

At Home Depot they have these bike racks that are really just a horizontal 'V' that scews into a stud then the tops of the 'V' hold your top tube. The nice thing is they only cost about 4 bucks and come with mounting hardware (two screws).
Since it's an apartment you probably don't wanna ding up the walls to bad, but you're only talking a few screws here and a small tube of caulk will take care of that whenever you move out.
