Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

EUSKALTEL- EUSKADI Helmets?

What do you guys think about the EUSKALTEL- EUSKADI Team helmets by Catlike (Whisper Model)

They look outrageous! Does anybody ride this helmet? What is it like?

I think it looks like a helemt designed for an alien, but I still like it...

Phonak, and a couple of other teams use this helemt aswell.

Seems Phonak have dumped the cheese-grater Catlike at some point this season. Phonak's rockin' the new Giro Ionos helmets in the Tour.

Only a pro could pull that off. Without the outragous colors and sponsor logos that helmet would look awful.

Just commented on the fugliness of Euskatel's helmets before I saw this thread.

Looks like a cross between a golf ball and a hornet's nest.

I've got a whisper helmet. It's ok. I haven't seen anyone else with one though.

A guy at the local shop told me that they weren't sold in the US because they didn't meet the safety requirements. I don't know if that's true or not, but I've never seen them in the US, either in the shops or on the roads. (Note: I was not looking for one for myself. I'm with Dr. Pete on the golf ball look.)

I'd get one if they were sold in the US. Perhaps I'll get one when I head to France later this year.

They are supposed to be sold in the US starting this year sometime. The Euro safety standards were finally excepted by the US. I want to get the white/carbon one. Too bad with the exchange rate, they're far too expensive to try whithout a fit first. I'll just wait until you can get them here. Here is an interesting helmet site: https://www.helmets.org/helmet06.htm

I like it. I don't know that I'd ever be bold enough to wear it, but it's got a certain ... je ne sais quoi ... a certain undefineable allure. My eye is immediately drawn to it everytime I see them on le Tour, and I don't know why. Perhaps because it's so obviously different from everything else out there? On first glance, all of the other helmets out there more or less look the same.

Anybody have any info as to whether this design has some sort of function? Like, is it supposed to have really good wind channeling capabilities or anything like that? Or is it simply a function of aestetics?

Spiuk? never heard of that before. I'd imagine they don't wear them because they don't sponsor any teams.

Spiuk/Kuips is a Basque clothing distributor, which is why I wonder. They do furnish the Caisse D'Epargne - Illes Balears UCI team.

Some Pro team used to, I think it may have been Eus-Eus. I guess they prefered the birds-nest-on-head look!

I'd be afraid a swarm of wasps would decide to nest in it while it's on my head!

For me, that's part of the appeal...

i have the model down, the kompact pro. It is very similar but with just a few less vents. They are awesome helmets as they do not give you a mushroom head.
