Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seeking bike between 700-1000

I checkes out the under $700 thread but I'm interested in spending a bit more. I'd really like Tiagra/105 mix or equivalent. I'm looking at Jamis and Fuji right now but i'd love to hear other suggestions. Also, I'm small at 5'4 so it's gotta be in the 47-50 range.
Suggestions?
Thanks
Rob

Look at a Trek 1500, I paid $875 ('05 model), has 105 components/ultegra RD. I added 105 calipers and put on new tires, and have 1200+ miles with no complaints. Its a good, solid bike for the $$. FWIW-I'm 5'09" 192 lbs, if it will hold me, it'll hold you too...

Giant OCR2. I paid $850 for mine ('06 model).

Includes Tiagra w/ a 105 RD.

I've only had mine for 2 weeks / 200 miles, but it's been a great entry level bike so far.

There are a lot of bikes at the pricepoint. I suggest going to all the LBSs and test riding everything you find in your price range, then come back to the forums if you have a few bikes that you're really torn between (e.g. they all feel good, but which one is the best value). Bike geometries are very unique, while one might fit you well, another might not. So test ride the bikes, and see which ones feel best to you.

The question of, I have X dollars to spend, which bike should I get, comes up all the time, but there is no magical answer. See what feels best to you.

Thanks for the help.
I know there are lots of choices in this range. Reason I'm asking is because in my experience many shops in this area don't carry bikes in my size range and on several occasions I've had to order bikes without being able to try them first. That's why I wa seekign first hand opinions.
Thanks1
Rob

I'd call them ahead of time to learn what they have in stock in your size ranges. My LBS does carry a decent inventory of that size range ... which I think is great. You have SO many to chooose from. In terms of price points, it seems that the Fuji's are able to be sold a little less expensive. But, they are very good bikes. Shoot for full 105 if you can get it.

If you're new to road biking, you would be wise to buy something from a local bike shop. There is really not much difference between different brand's entry level bikes besize sizing/fitting, so buy from a good shop that can help you with those.
