Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Floyd's Ride Must of Inspired Me!

I skipped my weekly club ride this morning so I could watch Floyd kick some butt in the time trial, I was very disappointed at first, but Floyd made it worth it. So after I had watched the live time trial and the re-run later this afternoon I decided to go for a ride a little early because I heard some thunder in the distance and thought that might cool things down(it didn't)!

So I started off and of course it started to rain on me, it actually felt really nice so I did not mind. I did mind when the fire truck came up beside me and splashed at least 50 gallons of water on me from the worlds largest puddle , that was a little annoying. Once I got out of the city(San Antonio), I hit the hill country and that is when things got FUN! There were no rain clouds to be found and the sun was out in full force, the roads were steaming because it was so hot. After around mile 16 I suddenly felt really good! I threw it in the big ring and never looked back, I made it my rest stop (Rudy's BBQ) and still felt great. I decidied to really push myself and see what I could do. This was the easier part of my ride but I never went under 21mph except at stop lights once I got back into the city. I ended up going 37.5 miles with an average speed of 18.7mph! It took me only 2 hours to complete my ride, that is the fastest that I have ever completed this ride. I have no idea what got into me, I can only attribute it to Floyd!

Here is the link to my ride, click on the "Distance/ Elevation" button to take a look at the graph of the ride: CLICK ME

On a side note, my chain seemed to suddenly get really dry after about 20 miles. Could all of the rain/puddles that I was riding through dried my chain off that much? It was so bad that I was apologizing to my bike for riding it with such a dry chain! I also was able to to try out my newly acquired Tifosi Pave and they lived up to all the hype! They were so comfortable that I did not even know I had them on for the majority of the ride!

PS
I also just passed up 1,100 miles on my Reno!

Nice!

My wife dropped me off in Irvine yesterday morning and I rode back to my house in Oceanside, CA. It was 52 miles and I did it in 3 hours flat averaging 16.8 mph. Temperature was probably in the low 90s by the time I got home.

Sweet. You're so lucky you have hills. No such thing in Houston.

I looked at your graphic. While the chart makes it look like you climbed some huge mountain, the fact is that the x and y axis are in poor scale to each other.

Climbing 600 feet over 20 miles isnt even worth mentioning in Pennsylvania.

On a bright note, great to hear you had an exciting ride!!

While I hate big cities, I have lived in San Antonio for about a year. It is an awesome place!

But no, they are not "hills"!!

Lemond Reno?

Nice bike. I guess it is working well for you. Do you still ride the stock wheels that came on it? How has that been? Do they stay in true?

How much greenbacks did you shell out for it?

Kewl - I need to get down to SA and ride some time. I've heard there is some good riding down that way.

I feel for the flatlanders from Houston. I rode with a Cat 2 from Houston quite a while back. I destroyed him on the hills here, and I'm not that brilliant of a climber for Austin(talk to El Diablo, or a couple mountain biker buddies I've got...sheesh those guys are tough.). He said they go over overpasses in Houston for hill training... yikes. We didn't try it but I bet he could sprint like a mother though.

Absolutely -- riding through rain can do quite a number on chain lubrication. Always best to clean and re-lube after long exposure to water.

The Reno is working great for me so far! I do still ride the stock wheels, I haven't had any problems with them yet. I got it for $799, but I think that you may be able to get it a little cheaper with the new models coming out sometime soon. It is basically the same bike as the Trek 1200 for about $150 cheaper.
