Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How fast can most dogs run? Is it really fast enough that one couldn't just out run the offending animal?
Well, I had an australian cattle dog chase me down and bite me. He made a B line right for my legs and was on me before I had a chance to accelerate. I eventually lost him, but only after he bit me. I was going about 25 mph when I started to drop him. If the dog is larger, like a doberman, you don't have a chance. They can run around 35 mph and accelerate very quickly. Just imagine if the dog is chasing you on an uphill. Can you ride 35 mph uphill?

We've just started carrying it on our tandem. Over the course of the last few weeks, we've had a dog get more and more aggressive with us about 1/2 way through our morning ride. It's never actually tried to bite, but my concern has been that he'll get under our wheels and cause us to crash.

One day last week, he did get under us. We ran right over that sucker's hind leg at about the knee. It was enough to roll him, but he managed to get out from under us and avoid the rear wheel. Luckily, we managed to keep the bike upright. I told my wife that I hoped we had broken it's leg, but it looked like it was moving around OK.

We picked up the Halt that afternoon, and wouldn't you know it, we've been by three times since and the dog hasn't shown his face. Maybe it's learned it's lesson, but if it hasn't, there is no debate as to whether it will get a dose of pepper spray in the face. I won't tolerate it putting my sweetie in harm's way!

Oh no! not PETA!

I was considering getting some pepper spray for some of the dogs on my routes but if PETA is coming after me, I'm definately getting it!

I've never heard of pepper spray doing any permenant damage to dogs but would be interested if someone could provide a reputable website as evidence so we don't think that you're just pulling facts out of your butt.

Meanwhile you could purchase this: https://www.tbotech.com/dogrepellent.htm

Anyone else think this is a bad idea?

My brother had soem go off in his faceonce guess what it did? Pretty much nothing. His eyes teared up a little bit and that was about it. Left him sneezing for like 20 minutes though. Pretty damn funny reaction.

Heres the thing about pepper spray 1 in about 20 or so people have little reaction to it or have a high pain tolerance and can still continue with their previous action. Even with the ability to carry a concealed gun in ohio with permit most dont carry one. Ypur more likly to have sme one pull a razor knife or knife on you here in ohio than a gun.

As per me not being to worried about gun v knife fight ive got some training in how to handle a gun weilding oponent with a knife. In reality guns are only realy a good defence out past the 3 foot or so mark for hand guns and about 6 to 8 foot for rifles. A person can easly take a single step at those distances and put the barrlel behind them.

With a hand gun you want to trap the gun hand with your arm and ribs so the gun is just past your back. At this point you take your knife and start your cut just in frnt of the trap point relax presure on the targets arm then step back and continue your cut down their arm in a s curve. This will insure the cutting of the nerves in the arm

Once you have cut from just above or below the elbow you drop your knife grab the gun as their hand passes through passes your own you know have their gun in hand and their left bleeding with a useless hand.

If your not close enough to use a knife and dis arm them your to far away to effectivly use pepper spray any how.

Want a eye opener on pepper sray read some police reports includign details of what was found on the person who was mugged and killed. Youll be surpised to note that many of them will have empty or nearly empty cans of pepper spray and dead from gun shot wounds.

Now this dont mean its not worth having as in some cases it can be a life saver. For example some one grabbing you from behind with a knife or even a gun. But when the attacker aproaches from the front from say 6 or more feet its not worth the risk to pull it out aim and fire.

I think the best self defence device non knife would have to be a stun glove that looks like a typical driving glove. Attacker grabs you around the kneck your normal and expected reaction grab their hand to prevent being chocked. Attacker owont even think much about it. Grab hand and trigger the glove. Youll get some of the shock but they will get a hell of alot more than you do. Youll go ouch they will go aaaaaahhhhh and fall on their butt.

Id say the biggest cause of death in a attack where some one defends them self is not following through and finishing the person off (ither by killign them or simply pummeling the crap out of them).

i carry a large canister of pepper spray with a string around it hanging on my neck or sticking out of my left-hand-side pocket. it isn't for dogs or coyotes or whatever. it's for human beings. i ride mostly at nighttime and would be less comfortable without some form of equalizer, even if it is only symbolic. i try to keep it where i can get to it quickly at all times, and be aware of my surroundings so i can get it out in advance if i need to. at 3am there's very little traffic so i stay as close to the middle of the road as i can, away from cars, bushes, anything that looks like a potential hiding place. then if there is someone who could hurt me, i'll have an extra second to draw.

my pepper spray is fox pepper spray which is supposed to be extra heinous.

eventually i'll get this: https://www.defensedevices.com/pespmo.html
apparently "Unit also mounts on motorcycles or on a walking stick."

By sweetie do you mean your wife or your bike?

I feel sorry for dogs because I think most of them are just raised to be mean. Don't get me wrong, I would pepper spray a dog if it meant that or my leg getting torn open, but my next move would be to report the owner for letting the dog loose and solving the situation for good.

I probably haven't invested in any defense item yet because I don't have much trouble around here. I have been called gay names and had stupid drivers almost hit my by mistake and even yell at me for it, but nothing that I felt required a weapon of self defense.

It doesn't even have to be negative. I make a kissy sound and/or say "hey puppy" at any dog that starts barking at me. They usually stop, perk their ears up and listen to me for a second. In those few seconds, I am far enough for the dog to not care about chasing me (hopefully). Hasn't failed yet.
