Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Performance stated they would cover shipping.

It's also the principle of the matter. Advertising these as 'hand finished' is BS. No marginally skilled human hand touched these.

I ordered the Open Pro's with 32 spoke Ultegra hubs from Performance bike on the "red phone" at one of the brick and mortar performance bike shops. I indicated that I had read (here in the forum) about people getting wheels that were not true out of the box, or went out of true shortly after the put them on their bike. The wrenches at the store said, "we'll check them for trueing and spoke tension before you walk out the door with them." I went to pick them up and reminded them that they said they would do this for me. I watched the wrench, he had to do a few very minor tweeks (1/4 turns on a few spokes) get them perfectly true. I've put a few hundred miles on the wheels and they are still true. I've been quite happy with the stuff from performance bike but I usually go to a store vs. ordering online. If I order online (because the item is not in stock) I use the "red phone" and get it shipped to the store for free. The brick and mortar performance stores will honor the web prices and most of the time the price is the same or in a few cases I've found them to be cheaper than online.

So, if you are worried about buying wheels from performance bike, and you are lucky enough to have a brick and mortar performance bike near you - that's the way to go. That way, if something goes wrong, you can go face-to-face with a person that sold you the product. And in every case, they make it right.
