Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the world of Randonneuring, everyone who finishes the brevet/randonnee within the time limit, and has reached all the controls along the way within their time limits too, "wins".

We all receive the same medal/plaque/certificate/ or whatever no matter what time we finished the event, and no matter how we placed in relation to other riders.

For some reason that concept is incredibly difficult to explain to most people. Most people seem to want there to be one clear "winner".

Nevertheless, when my coworkers ask me if I "won" my "race" on the weekend, my answer is always "YES". And I just leave it at that.

hehehehe I never even get that far with people. I tell them "I'm going to ride 125 miles on my bike" and they're stopped in their tracks right there wondering why on earth anyone would be stupid enough to want to do that. By the time they start wondering whether it's a race I have probably already started and finished the ride. I don't get too worked up over it. If I finish, I win!

Everything in life is a competition. Either understand that, or stay out of my way.
