Do You Take A Camera?
Just wondering if any of you take a camera with you when you ride? If so where do you put it? Like a SLR sized.

SLR? No way.
Sometimes I take a compact digital camera, which goes into my jersey pocket. Now that I have been forced into getting a camera with my mobile phone, I just use that. The picture quality is suckalicious but better than nothing.

hello
I would never take a SLR or any camera of that size on my rides. A compact 150gram digicam is all I need for my jersey pocket...
Now I only wish someone would come out with a camera with a phone built in.....(I'm not talking about a phone with a crappy little camera)...

Nowadays, I just chuck an Oly Stylus 600 in my jersey pocket.

if you're on a tight budget just get an older compact film camera
these days they're cheap and they are pretty small

I hear yah...
Agree with the original poster.....for my desires, I'd like to have a SLR type digital with, or at least one with 6+MP, 10X zoom, shooting in RAW mode, adjustable exposure and ASA speed...it would allow me to get those post-photo manipulatuions that just blow your socks off at 12X20 on my wall. My OLY 500 pocket Stylus just can't do all that.
Tonight with the wife we were racing back to the truck trying to beat the dark. I topped a hill and was stunned by one of the most beautiful sunsets of the summer...took my breath away even, and no camera! Not even a P&S in my pocket! Would have been a great addition to the home collection. Always seems to be no photo-ops when camera is with, and stunning Ops when I leave it behind.
So like you, I've wonderd how to always have the SLR available on the bike...so far, no easy method.
Another prob....how to carry a tripod. Tonights photo-op would have required one....asolution...a Gorilla-pod (small flexible tripod that can easily fold into a ball and pack under the seat). Just need to wrap the pod around the bike post or a tree branch and you're in buisness.

I bring a disposable camera on most of my rides, and I keep it in my handlebar bag.

I have carried a 1Ds with 3 lenses (including a 70-200 2.8L on the back on my bike in a bike bag. I know that now it really is not worth it... except you could probably carry a digi rebel (or even a 10D - 30D) in the little handlebar bags with maybe a 70-300 f/4-5.6 DO lens and maybe a 28-70 or so... but it would still weigh in at 5 pounds or so. I just resort to either a smallish film or digi cam for my jersey...

I take one on mountain bike rides and hikes only, not on my road rides. And it is not an SLR, just my digital Elph, I keep it in my backpack. There just isn't much interesting on my road rides worthy of a picture.

Ive got a dig Rebel, but I wouldnt bring it (too much bulk). Ill take my Canon PowerShot with one of these days and post some pics..I like the ride reports w/pics I see from time to time.

It ain't fashionable, but I carry my camera (Cannon S1 IS, which isn't compact, love the zoom) in a fanny pack, with extra batteries and a small note book to note locations, etc of pictures. At least the fanny pack is black and yellow, like my bike. My riding buddy and I have just made simple handlebar camera mounts, too. Great for using the movie mode on the camera for little 3-minute movies of us hurtling down hill.

I used to carry a SLR - Pentax MX w/40 2.8 pancake lens, one of the smallest 35 mm SLRs - in a fanny pack. Now I carry a small digital in a jersey pocket.

Cannon Digital Elph is what I carry, I used to carry a Pentax ME super with narrow 50mm lens, very small Film SLR, of course it died an early death so...
I saw a guy carrying a larger Digital camera on a ride, it wasn't a SLR, but it did have a large interchangeable lens. He kept the strap around his neck and used Velcro patch on the back of his camera and one on his hydrobag strap to keep it from bouncing.

On most rides here in Taiwan I carry a small Digimaster point & shoot in a little LowePro bag that I attach to my fanny pack. My wife and I do have a Contax 35mm and a Panasonic Lumix FZ-30, but so far we don't have a clip on bag to carry them. Here the deal is to expect the unexpected:
One Sunday morning, I stopped at a McDonald's for a mid-ride breakfast. Saw guy pedalling down the street on a unicycle.
One night we were riding back home from dinner and while waiting for a traffic light, a flat bed truck stopped next to us with a brand new Lamborghini Murcielago on the back (probably at least $300,000+ of 6.5L V-12 with about 630hp and standing belly button high in tangerine pearl metallic paint!!!). We followed it and took many photos while it was started up, taken off the truck and turned over to its owner.

The last two times I was on a biking holiday, I brought my 35mm SLR, F100 for one trip, F6 for another, a 24-85mm lens, and some slide film. It worked for everything I needed. I used a Lowepro Topload zoom. I suppose for my next trip, I'll bring my D200.

I carry this in my jersey pocket while commuting. Never know when I may need or want to take a picture.

I have so many bags and backpacks for my DSLRs that it wouldn't be difficult to take them with. A 15-30 and my 50-500 along with a 1.4 or 2.0 converter and you're good to go! (heeheheh)

Wow, I can just see toting the Bigma (Sigma 50-500) on a bike. My biggest bag is a Tamrac Expedition 8, and I would not want to ride along with that on my back.

I often carry a Pentax Optio W10. It is water proof which makes it nice to drop in a jersey pocket.
