Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The BIGGEST mistake Landis made was...

...winning Stage 17.

He should have let some other non-contender nip him at the line and F.L. would have never been tested.

The cycling world would have been duped in peace...

He had to win to gain enough time on his rivals.

I think his biggest mistake might have been doping. Just maybe... ;-)

Do you really think only the stage winner is tested?

I understood that the stage winner, MJ, and 1 random rider every stage receive tests.

Is this correct?

Of course. We are talking about a photo finish where he would get the same time as the winner.

It' turns out that Floyd didn't really need the time bonus in retrospect.

This whole thing is so *****ed up, seriously...

2. ProTour leader after the last stage if he is present,
3. The winner of the stage,
4. The leader of the general classification after the stage,
3. Two riders selected at random by the Inspector.

Biggest mistake was bonking on stage 16. If his team was worth a s*&t they would have led him up the climbs, where were they? No water, no food where was the domestique?
You ever seen a sport where your team doesn't support you on or off the playing field. That is the joke of all this. The whole sport is screwed up from top to bottom. Why not make the team accountable. Someone is caught cheating the whole team is accountable. Obviously the temptation of screwing up your own career is too much for a lot of these guys but how about if their actions effect other members of the team as well.
It is a real shame because it was one of those rare moments in sports that we only get to see a few times in our lifetime. It would have ranked up there with Miracle on Ice, "The Drive" etc, etc.

biggest mistake, besides doping, was not hiring personal attorney as soon as the" A" specimen tested positive. The spanish team attorney allowed all kinds of speculative comments come to press, drinking, dehydration.cortisone shots ,etc. while saying the "B" specimen he expects to be positive also, before the tests were done. WTF! I"m glad he has a decent lawyer now at least it may prevent him form being banned. TDF title is history though.

Quiting Disco/Postal or whatever. They have the technology down to where he never would have been caught, and the team talent to support the yellow jersey.

,,,,his biggest mistake was ever taking to a bike. this idiot has not only ruined his own career but wrecked the reputation of cycling and the tour. he's also stolen the pomp of a clean win from his spanish rival.

uci needs to start imposing life bans on these cheats....

no....and your point is?

this is a war the uci and tour must fight against the cheats.....it;s not fair to hide behind some assumption that because others cheat landis did no wrong.

if doping isn't addressed more vigirously you can watch cycling sink into the toilet of time.

it's utterly disgusting the way some people on this forum are now trying to "justify" Landis's drug use now that the evidence is conclusive.

He stole a clean win from Pereiro. LOL
Pereiro had an all world final ITT to try and hold off Landis. Wonder how on earth he did it?? Eating right? Working hard? or Jelly beans and a patch

But one must ask how did Oscar come back from 30 minutes down in one stage to take the lead?

Hamilton getting caught bothered me, Landis getting caught has destroyed my interest in the Tour. Should I feel that way? Probably not, but I do.

The whole ****ing peloton smeared their damn selves way before the landis thing. Ullrich? Basso? Pantani? The guy at the beginning of last century who hopped on a train? I think that the clean riders are in the vast minority...

bollocks....even le mond was quoted as saying that this years tour was one of the cleanest in history and you could see the riders tiring naturally.

the initial spanish doping investigation rooted out all those riders implicated with a suspect doctor....why does that smear the whole peleton?

there are hundreds of pro riders who don't dope...the vast majority in fact.

in light of what's happened to landis i can understand your need to now believe every cyclist in the peleton cheats...dream on

I could care less about Landis. I don't automatically root for him because he is an american.
Drugs or no, I was really hoping to see Ullrich and Basso go at it. As to the Lemond quote, I think that there is a difference between what they tell us and what actually goes on.

Lemond was happy that a 'clean' rider, Landis, won the Tour. Apparently, Lemond is not someone who can pick out the dopers.
