Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrading my 15 mile bike... will they accept it?

Well Ive bought my trek 1000 2 weeks ago but the sora componenets are very uncomfortable to me...
I have got 15 miles on my bike but I was just wondering if I can go back to my LBS and upgrade the bike to l 1200 or even 1500 with tiagra.. Has anyone have done this?
I was looking at the components upgrade but it was more $$$ to upgrade than to buy the new bike..
Do you guys think it will work?
Also, have you guys seen the new 1200 07 models?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but unless you've been out of town and haven't been able to ride the bike in the last two weeks, you have no clue what "comfortable" is or isn't. 15 miles is shorter than the warmup I did for my race today.

On my current bike, after 6000+ miles, I dropped the saddle 1cm.

Another 4000 (3.5 months) miles later, I got a 20mm longer stem.

The "feel" of the components is not going to change between grouppo's, by the way, aside from the thumb shifting with your current group. Ergonomics are not going to vary much.

Ride your bike more. Get used to it. Get to know it.

Best thing to do is go to LBS and ask them. If its a good shop and if they are considerate, they will understand your problem and work with you, especially if you are going to buy a more expensive bike from them.

To Duke of Kent, I know that I should try little bit more to feel more with my bike but I'm worried that my bike shop wont take my bike because it has been used a lot.
And I'm definately going to call them tomorrow to see if I can upgrade. thanks

In which way are you uncomfortable? I can't really see how "upgrading" a group will improve your comfort, because it's almost the same frame geometry/material.

When I ride my road bike, I usually tend to grab the bar not the top, so when I shift, it's very difficult for me since sora components has the different shifting position.

Talk to the LBS and see want they can offer, but like the other guys said - 15 miles is not enough time to be comfortable or uncomfortable. You need to get used to it.

If the bike is not damaged, then any decent LBS will let you upgrade. I went through the same thing, purchased a bike, wanted a better level of components(it is my money so it really did not matter if people told me what I needed or didn't) and the LBS(happened to be Performance) was glad to do it. You have nothing to lose by trying. They should work something out for you.

Did you take a test ride? Whatever would show up as unsatisfactory over 15 miles would have shown up on a test ride.

The test ride I took my current bike on was probably 15 miles in light rain, so I wouldn't be surprised if they let you trade up presuming there is no damage. However, I agree with the other posters that you haven't ridden nearly enough to get it dialed in.

I'd have to agree with many of you guys, Don Lee103, changing from sora to tiagra is not a huge jump, i really dont think you'll be able to tell other thant he fact that one says soran and one says tiagra. I think you should ride more on that bike, i meen like everyone says im still tinkering with my bike and its got over 600 miles on it for the montsh i've had it.

His problem is with the layout of the 2 shift levers on the Sora brifters.

Done Lee103 you could also adjust your riding style i men no one rides in just one position all the time they say almost 80% of riding will be done on the tops of the bar not the bottom, so thats something to thinka bout.

I bet if you never found this forum you'd be very happy with your bike. You start reading some of these posts and start thinking anything less than full carbon, and full Ultegra isn't worth riding. But it's all about being happy with your bike. Clean it up so it looks brand new and try to exchange it if that's what you want to do.

See if they'll let you swap the 1000 for a 1200.

Most of you are missing his point. He likes to ride in the drops and hates the Sora thumb shifters.

Don, I'm sure your shop would be happy to sell you a more expensive bike, as long as the 1000 is clean and they can sell it again. Good luck!

I have a set of Tiagra brake levers/shifters. They are practically new. They came off a 1200 that I upgraded to Ultegra. I'll sell them fairly cheap if you want to upgrade the Sora. Your LBS can install them for you. I assume they are compatible. I also have a cassette(9 speed), front dreailleur, bottom bracket, chain. All from the same groupset...and like new. again..this was the stock stuff from the 1200 that I upgraded to Ultegra. You'll basically have a 1200 after the upgrade because the frame of the 1000 and the 1200 is the same.

nah, it probably had at least 15 miles (test rides, etc) before you got it anyway

if you're serious about it exchanging it I think they would be open to it (you only have 15 miles on it, and you're gonna spend more money at their shop)

good luck

I'm going to disagree. The shifters operate differently and you're talking 9-speed vs. 8-speed which simplifies further upgrades. If you have any inkling of being dissatisfied with your present bike it will be a lot easier to negotiate a change now than it will after you ride it for a month.

my 15 mile ride home on my trek 1000 that I bought 8 days ago was uncomfortable, but I've got a few hundred miles on it since then and its getting a lot better, you will probably just get used to it. I was in the same position as you but I just decided to go out and ride.

Hello guys!, Thanks for replying on my post.
I phoned my LBS today, and they said "Sure, as long as thre is no damages on the bike."
I was thinking Trek 1500 for thre replacement with Shinamo 105 shifters.
Is there any other bike that you can also recommend?
Also, is there any difference between Bontrager race and select wheelsets?
THanks
Don

Sheesh, how many people actually read and comprehend before they reply?

Obviously you cannot make a good judgement on fit/comfort in 15 miles.

But Sora vs. the rest of the Shimano groups shift differently. He doesn't seem to like Sora (presumably the thumb shifters). I could figure that one out pretty fast too after trying both kinds.

Whatever you do make sure you ride it at least 16 miles before you buy it. Or else you might come back and post that you want to upgrade to the Madone because 105 isn't as comfortable as Dura-Ace. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just enjoy whatever you buy and ride it as much as you can. Besides upgrading is part of the fun.
