Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Penguin learns how to fly (shameless bragging, feel free to brag back)

Man...I dunno what got into my wheaties but I like it! My rides from the past two days:

Today's ride: This is the flattest decently sized loop around here, so I decided to see how fast I could do it. Boring scenery, but I had my head down for most of it.
Distance: 33.16mi
Wind: 5 miles w/12mph tailwind, 13mi w/12mph headwind, 15mi no wind
Elevation Change: approx. 2750ft
Time: 1:28
Avg. Speed: 22.43mph

Sunday's ride: This is probably my favorite short/medium sized loop, as most of the roads have practically no traffic on them, and it has a 1400ft climb with some awesome views.
Distance: 38mi
Elevation Change: approx. 3300ft
Time: approx. 1:58
Avg. Speed: 19.4mph

Penguin, PM me with the route details, you know I frequently bike in that area.

Test that man's blood or urine!!! My best is 20.4mph on a similar 29.5 mile ride. Wait better yet send me some of those special Wheaties so I can ride like King Penguin. Good job.

Yeah, I was kinda suprised too considering the wind tonight. Heck, I would have been content with 21mph. Nature has a sense of humor...the only time I got a tailwind was when I shoulda been warming up. I had a headwind for the long undulating downhill, and no help at all from mile25 to the end. The mountains up here make some weird wind patterns.

Very nice--and very impressive! Were you using aero bars or just the drops? Either way that's pretty darn fast for the conditions.

I sure wish I had a 5 mile climb around here like the one from your Sunday ride. I have lots of rollers on my close-to-the-house routes here in the Raleigh area but no sustained climbs of more than a couple of minutes within easy biking distance. I'm jealous.

Drops only.

That climb kicks all sorts of ass. 4 miles @ about 6.1% It starts off as a 15-20% wall and gets shallower in the middle, only to get steep near the top again. There are a few climbs about that length around here, and plenty of insanely steep mile or two grades.

Well, I discovered something that's I'm sure obvious to you speed demon racers. It's easier to push yourself when you are chasing somebody. I had stopped to adjust my cleats( think the right one is good; still working on the left) when I got passed by several riders, including two that looked halfway serious about keeping a good pace. They headed down the deadend trail to the turnaround; I followed and after turning around saw I was 3-400 meters behind them.

In true R600DuraAce fashion, I increased my wattage and gained on them. They must've known something was up as they increased their speed; now 18.5mph, now 19, now 20. But it was no use. I had my quarry in sight and was not about to let up. I kept with them and slowly closed the gap. With less than a quarter mile left on the trail, I came up even with them and said "how's it going?". They chose not to stay with me as I dialed it up still more, to 87 watts, and left them behind.

You should get us some pics of this sometime.

But back to something more OT, those numbers are quite impressive.

Yeah and I did a solo century at an average of 20.7mph without aerobars or support--we both deserve a cookie. But given the profile of Penguin's courses I still think his feats were more impressive.

oh my, this had me laughing

i've also noticed it's easier to go faster when chasing someone. there's this kind of steep hill that i can only spin 11 mph up normally, but every time i see another cyclist ahead of me, i muster 13 mph and pass. many of my best rides involve trying to chase someone down. even if i can't catch up, it's especially motivating and i feel superrrr.

word, when I have someone to chase I gain a lot of speed out of sheer motivation. These rides were completely solo, btw. I was aiming to turn my sunday ride into a metric but I ran out of daylight My next goal is a solo century at 20mph, which shouldn't be too hard down in New Paltz as the terrain is a lot flatter down there than it is up here in the catskills.

Here's a picture taken from a road that parallels that 1400ft climb, which'll give a generall idea of what the view is like.

With those numbers, and with that much elevation, you should be racing. Even if I trained hard for a year, I might get that fast. Somehow I doubt it.

I don't know about your endurance but given your other numbers I suspect you can probably do it. My solo effort was only 4000 feet of climbing for the entire 100 miles--much less climbing per mile than the two routes you posted, obviously.

My endurance is good...I've done a few double metrics with a teammate this year and regularly do rides around 50-60 miles. Still trying to get the hang of refueling though, I never wind up drinking enough on longer rides. Avg'd around 18-19mph on em, but they had somewhere around 10k feet of climbing each.

I know the feeling. I finally started slipping one of these onto my seatpost before long rides, even though they look stupid:
