Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What a shame that the High Sierra route doesn't go into the mountains. If I'm going to drive all the way out there, I want to get in some climbs. The highest pavement in California is there: Rock Creek Rd. And the high alpine region is very pretty.

South Lake, almost 6000' above the town of Bishop:

Fish pond at Glacier Lodge, 4500' above the town of Big Pine:

And the colors in the Fall are pretty amazing. Road to South Lake, end of September:

I'm going to Mammoth with some friends, Sept 28-Oct 2, to ride the high roads and see the colors. Anybody else going up there?

Sorry I'm gonna miss you by a few days. I'm planning to head to Bishop the week or so before Everest, do a little tune up/recon on the climbs, and come home Tuesday or maybe Wednesday after (if I can walk by then ). I gather, then, that you're not doing EC?

While the High Sierra route doesn't go into the mountains per se, there are three high desert climbs that I recall as being a little more than insignificant - at least to me!

No, I decided to not do EC this year. I was going to do it as a fun ride, but I knew would get there and wouldn't be able to help myself and would end up racing. So going with a couple of buddies after EC means I won't be tempted to race.

Hope you have a great EC. Be sure to post a complete report.
