I'm now glad I did not attempt my first century at the HHH. Not because of the heat/wind, b/c I have been riding in those all summer.
But because if I had gotten to the Hell's Gate by 12:30 (which I would have in plenty of time based on my 100K ride) and they turned me away, I would have been so pissed and the rest of the ride would have ruined for me.
I think I will go with my original plan of just getting on my bike some Sunday morning in the fall and just riding 100 miles. That way I do it on my terms.
I think they pissed off a lot of people doing what they did. The least they could have done is some sort of screening of people wanting to continue. What kind of screening, I don't know, but still something.

This is the official reason for closing Hell's gate. I can understand you people being a little miffed or even pretty well pissed off, but you must remember that this is basically a "battle decision". How would you like to be the Medical Director or the Event Director and have sombody die or be seriously injured because you left the route open and the med facilities became overtaxed? There is a huge amount of responsibility placed on those positions. Rider safety should be the primary concern of all event staff. It's not like we don't already have a litigous society. The HHH organizers are some of the best I've ever seen. They have a handle on how much water, ice etc it takes to pull off the event. The fact that rest stops were running out of water and ice indicates to me that consumption was way up and that was just another indicator of trouble ahead. The short supply was not likely because of a lack of planning but more likely because of higher than normal demand. The HHH staff tracks the amount of water, ice etc they use each year.

Hell's Gate Closed at 11:30
We have had to close Hell's Gate only a few times in 25 years. During the late 80's we establish a hard and fast rule for closing the 100 mile route when heat stress could be fatal. The decision is made by the our medical officer. The decision is not made before the ride but in response to weather conditions as they occur. Dr. Keith makes his decision based on heat, solar light, wet bulb thermometer, black bulb thermometer, wind, and the speed at which the stress indicators are accelerating through the morning. I am the chairman of the ride and might want to hold it open for the sake of opinions. That is why Dr. Keith makes the decision. His process is based on fact, not my emotional response to want to please everyone, and is made to protect rider health. If you have ever been responsible for other people; children, elderly parents, co workers, etc. you know the level of commitment you must have. Your decision and that of Dr. Keith should be based on what is best for the other person whether they think it is their best interest or not. If there was a thunderstorm that was capable of producing ground lightening our response would be the same. We would not wait for the first person to be hit by lightening. No apologies, it was the right thing to do and done for all the right reasons

Let me know if I've missed anyone or have misspelled your screenname. I've got a reminder set in Outlook and may tap someone else to act as a backup.
p.s. I can't believe that with this many BF members there that we didn't figure this out ahead of time. I think we need to take some lessons from the So. Cal. contingent...those guys (and gals) are rockin' on the social scene!

I'm from Lafayette, LA and I used to live in Wichita Falls. I've ride the HH 100 many times, I have ridden the last three years also, but this one was tough. I did not make Hell's gate in time. So My buddy and I were sent back the short way...wound up at about 75 miles. In my opinion of all the years that I can remember 10 or so in all, this ranks up there pretty high. I only remember in 93 maybe 94 as being worse. Benny

Hopefully jsharr, thecahill and kevinmcdade will be joining us next year. Has anyone heard from Kevin since the weekend? He was considering making the trip morning of, but something tells me he stuck around town this past weekend.
The SoCal social crew certainly does have it 'going on' over in their regional forum. Not a whole lot of action on the Southwest regional forum yet, but hopefully that'll pick up as the news spreads about them. I'm probably going to post a few more N. Texas area ride threads in there later this month for upcoming rides. Anyone else wishing to get a group together to ride should certainly do the same.

Apparently one of the medical directors has published an article on the medical aspects of the HHH:

Allright then...spinbackle...you're in charge of securing custom BF ride jerseys (light colors only please) and Sooner...the RV to serve as party central! We'll bring up the Tito's Handmade Vodka, tonic and limes so we can make sure nobody gets malaria or scurvy! Woo hoo!
