Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Route Planning ???

A while back someone posted a route planning website that allowed you to click a box to follow the road. It seemed to follow curves better than g-map. Can anyone help me out?

I think it's www.routeslip.com you're thinking of.

Topo route. Cypress listed it a while back and made me aware of it. It has a option to "make" the route follow the roads. Works well, but if you have a really long route then that option can take a lot of time to re-calculate every time you add a point.

do you know what logic it uses when it picks a route which is non-direct?

Playing with this is going to cost many hours out of my life this week.

Oh, and thanks.

No idea. I just double click fairly close so that there is only really one way for it to go. Kind of like gmap, but it handles curved roads like a dream.

Just don't send me a bill for "lost time" -

I believe it finds the coordinates of the two points and uses Google Maps to choose the fastest "driving" route. If you're not aware already, you can do driving directions on Google Maps by putting in two sets of coordinates. For example: https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...UTF8&z=11&om=1

Another nifty map tool is https://mapper.acme.com. Although it won't measure custom cycling routes or anything, it's neat to fool around with. Plus it has USGS topo maps built right in, and NEXRAD weather radar. See the elevation and weather on your next ride!

Bikes: Pedal Force RS, Serotta "Atlanta", Gitane "Tour de France", (2) Specialized "Stumpjumper", Trek "950"

FYI
Be sure to use the appropriate web browser. Toporoute works best with Internet Explorer ... it has much greater difficulty following the road using Firefox.

Don't forget to send an email to Al G. to thank him for inventing it.

You know that he never said that. One of those election year myths that become fact over time...

Campaigning is so much less fun though if you limit your accusations to facts.

(For example, in an earlier post I said the topographical representation of my ride from Brooklyn to Harlem every day is like a graphing of the brain activity of our Presidents. The 200 foot climb that is the Brooklyn Bridge however makes this an unlikely comparison.)
