Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

getting chain grease off of bike shorts

anyone know a good way to get black marks from bike chains off
shorts? I got some on my shorts tonight and I haven't touched them for fear
of messing it up. How do you get this stuff out?

Mineral spirits wil take it off without hurting the material in any way whatsoever. I've read the proper way is to get a cotton cloth wet with the mineral spirits (paint thinner) and, press to the soiled material from the opposite side (which in this case means the inside of your shorts). Hold, maybe squeeze a bit, and the grease will quickly disolve. Then toss in the wash or, in your sink with mild detergent (ie., Ivory Snow).

Having said all this, I would not do anything. Enough will come out during a routine washing that I don't see the point in trying to restore them to perfection. A bike short is just a bike short. Nothing special.

I have bike grease on all my cloths. I can't help it. And I can't get rid of it. I just try real hard when I'm in my "fancy pants" not to go anywhere near my bikes!

I use Oxy Clean. Follow the instructions on the package for getting stains off. It works.

They make a citrus/pumice product now that is also very good and environmentally benign.
