Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unexpected Cager Comment

Okay, so this morning I'm down in the drops, riding up a hill on my way to work. I hear a car coming up on me, kinda slow, and hear yelled out at me: Woo-woo! Sexy a$$!

I look left as the car is passing me and it's a couple of high school girls, grinning at me and waving! OMG! I mean, I know riding is good for my physical condition (hence my moniker), but since I'm not limber enough to check it out myself, I just didn't have any idea! I guess I could tell my wife and say "see, honey, that $1200 was well spent." Or maybe I won't.

I'm so used to reading BF posts about rude comments and flung items that I just had to share this grand and glorious moment with all of you. I can't help wondering, though, if they were just playing with my mind? Whadda think?

High school girls are not yelling "sexy a$$!" As a compliment to anyone over 23 years of age.

Are you over 23?

Ah, time for one of my other favorite Wooderson lines: "That's what I love about high school guys, man. I keep getting older, but they stay the same age. Yes they do."

Correction, in the urban areas some high school girls are DATING people over 23 years of age. It's disgusting, and if any of my students ever admit to such I'm reporting it and I hope the guy has to register as a sex offender!

Anyway, I have heard just as many "good" comments as bad ones while riding, but I have a feeling the good ones are usually a joke.

True, but it sure isn't about the guy being romantic or rich. Must be the drugs.

I think access to alcohol is usually sufficient in those relationships.

Had it happen to me recently (posted it here) and I'm 42. I prefer to think that these young ladies simply recognized my mature good looks.

I did have a great ride home...seemed to have endless energy.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

once I was riding up to an intersection in a quasi-right hand turn lane. A car came up behind me and waited for a couple secs. I moved over to the left side of the lane so they could make a right turn. the guy rolled down his window and said "thanks". I was in shock and couldn't say a thing.

Hey, Ed Harris and Sean Connery are big-time sex symbols with the right young women...

I usually agree with you but this time I think you are missing it. First of all, to urban kids there are virtually no barriers to alcohol; second, they don't really want the alcohol anyway.

Drugs or just the excitement...

Yeah, good point. Just my sheltered upbringing shining through, I suppose.

I always wonder if this is how the kids are making fun of us now...

Hey, let's yell out the window at these guys and make them think we're sexy.

I'm NOT a sexy man. This much I know. My wife reminds me, just in case. They can't be laughing with me... it must be at me.

Well I turned 40 this week and I got carded in a bar not too long ago. I've had youngins yell stuff at me. Usually it's something about my legs, or just generic hooting. I have nice legs. (My wife says so.) The older I get, the more females seem to pay attention to me. Hmm.

40 is the new 20!

Unfortunately, here in NYC -- 12 years 9 months* is the new 20.

*12.9 is the age for Junior High School.

bingo. I was with Dr Pete, though, being raised in a nice suburban area. Not that drugs were absent, just more discrete. Now that I teach in Los Angeles, I feel like the kid with the things these 12-14 year olds have experienced.

Ok, I'm an escapee from the 50+ sub-forum and have my own theory about that. I believe they're saying, "You know, maybe when I'm 80 I'll get me one of those fit-at-60 [or whatever] types."

I guess I could tell my wife and say "see, honey, that $1200 was well spent."

Dude, your wife already knows.

And they probably weren't sure of your age, either. Reasonably fit cyclists all look the same from behind, especially to people who don't look at a lot of cyclist ass.
