Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Calorie Burn per hour Calculation

For all you science and math wizzards out there, given the following:

Rider Weight: 190lbs
Distance: 30km
Time: 1hr

Can you roughly calculate the calories burned in the hour?

Further to the above, as you increase your time in the saddle do you begin to burn more or less calories per hour (say on a century ride) or does it roughly stay the same given the same average speed per hour? i.e. do you burn the same amount in hour 1 as in hour 4, all things being equal?

Thx

Calorie burning rate is a function of topography.

This link gives you a back-of-the-envelope approximation for calories burned.

Assuming rolling terrain (i.e. not totally flat but no major climbs) I'm going to say roughly 25 calories per kilometer at that speed.

Bikes: Willier Zero 7; Merlin Extralight; Calfee Dragonfly tandem, Calfee Adventure tandem; Cervelo P2; Motebecane Ti Fly 29er; Motebecanne Phantom Cross; Schwinn Paramount Track bike

flat terrain, no wind, road bike on the top, 667 calories. do it in the drops and it drops to 499 calories.
