Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nice Stems?

How do I know if I need a quill type stem or the other type of stem?

If it bolts from the top and there's no bolts on the side of the stem (talking the steer tube end here) then you have a quill stem. If you have bolts clamping the stem to the steer tube on the outside (usually through the side, then you have threadless

There is a third possibility, the bike could already have a threaded->threadless adapter so that's not a foolproof way to tell.

No no no, I know that but how do you know which to use on a bike that has neither at the moment?

steerer tube protruding above headset/headtube = threadless
Otherwise, threaded, as shown in Operator's photo.

Neither what? If it doesn't have a headset on the frame, then you can go either way. You are mainly constrained by the fork. If there are no threads at the top then you must go threadless. Vice versa for the other possibility.

if this is for that Faema colored De Rosa Neo Primato, i think that it comes with a threadless fork. I suggest a Deda Newton.

You also need to know the diameter of a threadless stem. They come in 1", 1 1/8" and 1 1/4".
1 1/8" is the current std for road bikes.

Phat Roadie, did you sell me my super-hot, orange frame?

There is so much about bikes that I thought I know nothing about and is kind of a shock since I thought I knew almost all there is to know about bikes. Building this bike has turned into such a humbling experience.
