Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was looking at trying those next. I currently use Conti. but I wanted something with a smooth stem. My floor pump has a real tght fit and if I am too anxious about getting on the road I can ruin the valve very easily.

Anyone use latex? are they really worth the double price (and only 5 g diff.)?

Been buying Specialized. Though, my Parktools pump seems to be less than happy with them some times. But I think that's the pump's problem more than anything.

Supposedly, latex tubes are more stretchy, thus improving grip and reducing flats. If you like pushing your bike to the limit, you may notice a difference in handling.

whatever the LBS has in stock.

unless you have some special event that you've trained for all season, and every ounce actually counts, worrying about the weight of a tube is idiotic.

Ok, explain to me how the tube being more " stretchy" can possibly affect handling? The handling of a tire is going to be governed by the coefficient of friction of the material touching the road, the size of the contact patch, and the degree to which the tire deflects, or deforms. The latter of which is going to be controlled mostly by air pressure. I can't imagine the material of the innertube would have any measurable effect, and if there were a measurable effect it could be offset by a pound or two of pressure one way or the other.

I can't imagine that anyone can corner on that razor's edge where a butyl tube makes them go down, and the latex tube keeps them up. How fast you can corner is really controlled by skill rather than tires and certainly not tubes.

And personally, I find handling better without latex, however there is more risk in certain corners.

On the question of Latex- If they are only 5 grammes lighter then you have a heavier grade of Latex tube. I use Latex on the Tandem- For one very good reason- If you get an in and out Thorn puncture- it semi seals around the hole and does not suddenly go down. It still goes down but no where near as fast. Then again- I just go into my LBS and they Supply me with the tubes. Suppliers change but the price doesn't unless I want a cheap tube- and they only seem to last a year. I can get a full 12 months out of my expensive ones.
