Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pegoretti frames

Hi,
Does anyone ride a Pegoreti frame? I am considering a steel frame made by them but would like to hear some rider opinions first.
Thanks

I own a Duende. I bought it in January from Competitive Cyclist and I love it. It is light, stiff and provides
a very smooth ride. In fact, I think the ride is smoother than my Lemond Zurich w/spine technology. My
Duende also descends as if it is on rails. I have over 3000 miles on it so far. I bought mine with the
"Green Arrows" paint. Web pictures don't do justice to the color.

On several organized rides I have only seen one other Pegoretti. It was also a Duende but a couple of
years older than mine.

You'll more than likely hear that Pegs are life-changing bicycles. I ride a Fina Estampa and it's a nice bike. Nice mainly for the paint job but other than that, it's just another bike. It's heavy, the welds are unremarkable, the fit and finish are acceptable and the ride is okay.

I think most of the Peg story is mystique and exclusivity group-think. C'mon, how can anyone not love a long-haired, Zappa loving, chain smoking, Italian artist? That's the main reason I picked one up, and so you can imagine my surprise when I didn't become faster or stronger and the sun didn't come out accompanied by flowers, butterfiles and singing bluebirds. You'll get a lot of attention and you'll be part of the cult which might be worth the price of admission. And maybe it'll be a life-changer for you. I think I'm just a tad cynical to be open to the program.

I ride a Marcelo and it is absolutely amazing.

Here's some old pics from when I got it: (i've since added a record double crank, chorus RD, record shifters, DT swiss 1.1 wheels built on Campy Record Hubs): I will add more pics when i find my digital camera

The ride is simply amazing! It descends on rails and the power transfer is excellent when comparing to old school steel bikes. The Marcelo is the best blend of the pegoretti's with it's super huge seat and chainstays which add to the power transfer abilities. I wouldn't trade this bike for the world. I get all kinds of compliments from people on much more expensive bikes.

Mine weighs exactly 20lbs which doesn't concern me the least bit because the engine (me) weighs 240+ so I'll start worrying about a sub 16lb bike when i'm sub 200lbs

stric,

i think they are generally considered stiff racing bikes so if you want to do centuries it will beat you up and therefore you might want to consider other bikes. the paint on pegorettis can be quite remarkable though.

NOOOOOOO.....this is untrue! The bike is stiff enough to be a race bike but I rode my first century on it on labor day and I got off the bike wanting to do more. This bike will not beat you up at all. The aluminum ones, maybe, the steel ones, NO WAY in hell! Steel soaks up the road but the way in which Dario designs his tubing allows for great power transfer with the same steel comfort level.

2300 miles this year and I've yet to come off the bike thinking "wow, this bike beats me up" but i'm usually thinking "wow, I can't wait until tomorrow's ride"

He's not an artist, he's an artisan.

That's a good point... I don't have enough miles on mine to make a decent report, but the initial impression I get is that it's _very_ stiff. It has that neat steel 'liveliness', but it doesn't have the vertical compliance of steel bikes I've had in the past (Marckx Corsa, Serotta Colorado, Paramount...)... I like the way it climbs, the stiffness makes it feel like there are no power losses. The whole 'decends like it's on rails' thing, I think I can address. I've had it up and down 15% plus grades ( a couple anyway...). My point of reference as far as decending is my C-50, and well... it's still King, I've never ridden a bike that tracks thru fast downhill corners like the 'nag... Having said that, the Marcelo is pretty good, just a little 'nervous' compared to the C-50. It should be its shorter front to center, its a neat handling bike, quick turning, but not so quick that it requires 'adjustments' mid corner. Even though its quick handling it did pass the 'no hands, going ~50mph, without a wobble' test. At this point I'd have to say that for a century I'd still pick the 'nag, for club rides etc., probably the Peg'. I only have ~200 miles on her at this point, and it should be noted that I ride on old school tubular wheels (36h, low box section rims...) and that has a lot to do with the way a bike 'feels'...

I think of "descending on rails" as riding on a roller coaster not a street car, train or slot car. It may not
be that good a description. Another poster mentioned a Pegoretti is just another bike. I agree. While I
love mine buying was not a life changing event. It did make me faster mainly because it is lighter than
my Lemond Zurich. If I wanted another bike for centuries and multiday tours I would buy another one.
I would probably buy a Look, Orbea or Specialized Tarmac if I wanted to race.

I also didn't buy mine because of the cult like following, although I do like owning a bike that is not
commonly seen when riding. I could have gotten the same feeling with a Waterford, De Rosa,
Pinarello or any bike not made by Trek, Specialized or even Colnago.

And that's why I bought my Duende too. It's different. I'm tired of seeing Trek, Giant, etc. all over the place.
