gloves feel like their choking my hand. this weekend my palm met the gravel, and im sure gloves would of helped, but its still not worth getting choked

The Biker (farmer) tan is a badge of honor, and also a way of evaluating the competition. You see a guy with a really strong tan that only goes up to a couple of inches above his knees, a tan oval on the back of his hands and the rest of him is fish-belly white, thats someone that has put in the miles.

Don't even go there; it's like I've got brown leg warmers and arm warmers on. No finger tanlines, though. I must go outside for other reasons besides cycling. Silly me. |
I agree, wear it with pride. I walk into my office in a suit and tie and someone always asks why I have tan lines on my hands and around my eyes.
I always reply, what did you do this weekend? |

Never mean't to infere one has to wear gloves, just my personal experience. |
OK, I wore gloves tonight because it was in the low 60's and it was not so bad.

last time i took a fall i skidded along the pavement on my hands. seems like the hands always take a lot of abuse in the fairly straightforward crashes. people put their hands down instinctively and all the skin rubs off the palms.
my last pair of leather gloves were destroyed in a crash. think of what would have happened to my hands if i wasn't wearing gloves. ooh, it would not have been pretty. and one other minor crash but again some slding across the hands. in my house, GLOVES and HELMET are brothers. They do out together EVERY time, and they do the exact same thing for me, just in a different way. i hear you on the tan lines. i've got one wicked farmer's tan. a belly that looks like some type of albino shark eggsac yet arms looking like george hamilton. not a great look at the beach. . |
I always wear gloves. I'm kind of proud of my glove tan (I wear full-finger MTB gloves tho).

training, no.
racing, yes. |
ianh, I posted this a couple months ago in another thread: The best adivice wear gloves ALWAYS. Just put extra suncreen on your forearms.
Always gloves...... I like being able to hold things after a crash........ I used to not wear gloves for training...... I fell once at a low speed due to some wet pine needles....... hand was wrapped for a week. I don't want to know what my hand would have looked like had it been at 30+ mph For me always gloves..... the only down side is the stupid glove tan. By the way OP, if you need another reasoon to wear gloves take a look at this guys palms......(posted from another glove thread) EDIT: Removed for graphic purposes and at request of bike froum member... sorry for those offended.... if you wish to view pic.... click here. Warning Graphic http://grahamwatson.com/dublin/misc/image65.html *Notice the guys left palm.... or where there USED to be a palm Also a reason to wear a helmet! EDIT: Removed for graphic purposes and at request of bike froum memeber.... sorry for those offended.... if you wish to view pic.... click here. Warning Graphic http://grahamwatson.com/dublin/misc/image29.html I also remeber reading in another glove thread about how someone's riding partner went to wipe glass off his wheel w/o gloves and cut through his palm to his tendon..... he now has a screwed up hand... if anyone can remeber which thread that was post it. thanks |

+1 |
Gloves have saved my hands lots of times. My last big crash I caught my hand between the handlebars and the road and broke a finger/took quite a bit of skin off... and that was WITH gloves. Definitely glad I was wearing them. I prefer full finger gloves myself, although ones without all the off-road motocross crap glued onto them are difficult to find.
If you're worried about tan lines, then imagine how grinding your hand down to a bloody stump would look! |
Yes, I wear gloves all the time. I've got 5 pairs to chose from depending on the weather and what kind of ride I am doing. I spend most of the year in long fingered gloves actually. From now probably until April/May I'll probably be wearing some sort of long fingered gloves.

Gloves, sometimes
I use a pair of weightlifting gloves, though I'm not a weightlifter. $5 at a big sporting goods store...
