Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A buddy of mine has an old "serial killer" van (that's what he calls it. His other car is an uber soooped up Vette). That thing is the best bike transporter. We can easily get 4 bikes and riders and all their gear in it at once. If we have to stop somewhere the bikes are locked up inside the van behind tinted windows. I have to admit it is pretty awesome. I have a Ford Exploder... er, em I mean Explorer. It works pretty good. I can get 4 bikes in but only me and one other person if I haul that many bikes.

I've read that the Honda Fit can hold 3 bikes on the inside! That's alot of bikes for a little car, and it gets nearly 40mpg highway!

I vow to never drive a Mitsubishi ever again. I had a DSM (which has the same freakin engine that they still use for performance models) which was awful in every regard.

And considering the Evo starts at approx. 10 grand more than the WRX, your friend shouldn't be so smug. Especially when the crank in his 4G63 starts walking and the oil seals blow out. I hope they fixed that... They've only been making the engine for 20 years.

Sorry, I really hated that car.

Italian????

I figure that I bike just about everywhere and rarely drive. So when I do drive, I need to be in something that I am equally passionate about the mode of transportation.

I tried mounting a bike rack to the rear of it, but the heat from the engine bay melted the rubber surface mounts. Vrooom vrooom.

Not to go off topic but crankwalk is a thing of the past. Your old DSM 4G63 is mounted totally different from all the current motors. Current crankwalk is at -1%. I got 60k on my Evo and she runs just as strong as day one.

Subaru outback. I have a '98 with about 180k miles. Still runs great. I would bet I will get at least 250k out of her before I get a new one.

I don't know about getting a bike in though. I can fit my bike in the back with the seats folded down, or with one seat down and the front wheel off. But there isn't enough headroom to put the bike vertically. The newer outbacks may have a higher roof though.

I have the hitch so a hitch mount racks works. And you can get a roof rack easily because the stock outback luggage rack is load bearing, so it can hold a ton of weight. I have a thule with the crossbars and the feet that clamp onto the stock luggage rack.

I was also unable to fit a bike in the Acura RDX with the rear wheel on (I was thinking about a fork mount) with the rear seats folded down. Seatpost was too high on my road bike (by 5-6"). And I was also unable to lay the bike frame flat in the rear cargo area (too small). But the road bike DID fit in the 2006/7 Outback cargo area flat on the floor with the wheels off. Maybe the 2005-2007 Legacy/Outback cargo area is slightly larger than the 1998's. That is very likely.

If you're a cycling enthusiast and you're checking out cars, BRING YOUR BIKE. You sort of have to know if it will FIT in the car. There will be times when you don't want to either have a roof rack - or use it.

Not much to look at but it is paid for and will run forever. 1999 Wolfburg edition with 88k on the clock...previous car was a 1990 Wolfsburg edition which I sold with 192k on the clock and it was still running great.

Car now has a Thule on top.

Honda Element seems to be the hot vehicle for cyclists these days.
Works well for carrying two bikes upright back there.

I am driving 2002 Saab 9-3 (the last hatchback model) and got 3 racks on top, but I am thinking about taking over my wife's car, a 2007 VW Passat wagon, and turning it into a team car, I think I could put 5 racks on top of that Passat

Well I don't know about best car for cyclist, but this is definitely the worst car for a cyclist. If I take off my front wheel I can get my bike in the back seat. That being said, this is my second favorite toy, 1998 GSX Eclipse. $800 custom built sound system entirely from my garage. 10x better than anything you will ever get from the factory. Notice how this leaves no room for another bike in the trunk =)

Think about a 9-5 wagon. I have a 2002 9-5 Aero wagon and it's the pretty much the best all-round car I've ever owned.

04 Chrysler FWD Pacifica but my previous 2 best were a BMW 525 wagon & Mercedes 300SD Turbodiesel, both could transport 1 bike easily either in the rear or minus frt wheel in the trunk. There was also the old Suburban which could easily carry several bikes plus 2 hunting dogs but it was quite the gas hog.

Toyota Sienna. With 3rd row folded down flat, one or two road bikes can be carried inside, upright and fully assembled, using Performance's small Quickstands, weighted for stability with some soft scuba weights. I'm also looking at a Delta product that will expand across the floor and lock the front fork down.

In the US, the amateur bike racers often drive Porsches and BMWs.
Because were amateur bike racers (ie, we have regular jobs) we can drive Porsches and BMWs to racers. I'd starve to death on the avg pro salary. Even though my bike will fit in the back of my Porsche, i leave it at home and take the VW Jetta TDI or the Jeep Cherokee instead. The trunk in the TDI is huge. No bike rack needed and the gas milage is great for those long slogs to faraway rides and races.

I am actually thinking of getting a Honda Odyssey, so that my strapping teenage boys will have more room, and so that I can store bicycles upright on the inside. Is that wrong?

Good Stuff. I alternate the blue with the gold every two years in the 928. If i were doing trackdays (been a long time) it would be every 6 months per PCA rules. Powerbleeders rule!
