Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikers vs. Cyclists

I'm sure this has come up before . . . I'm new to BF. I have a pet peeve about the term "bikers" instead of "cyclists." A biker rides a Harley with a loud engine. A cyclist rides a bicycle and is his own engine. Even some of my cyclist friends refer talk of "bikers." I know it's semantics. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I should go see a therapist . . . er Theraper.

Since you're new here...it helps to have less pet peeves.

Nah...I like it. I tell someone I rode 100 miles on my bike on saturday and they go:
"oh, what do you ride?"
"A Giant"
"Never heard of it. What kind of engine does it have?"
"These" *pointing to legs*
"A BICYCLE????!!!! You rode 100 miles on a bicycle???!!! OMG! That's awesome!!!"

Besides a lot of "bikers" (motorcyclists) around here give out a lot of mutual respect. They're fine by me.

As a motorcyclist and a bicyclist, I tend to confuse everyone. I can't say, "I rode my bike." without having to stop and clarify what kind.

And since I don't ride HD or cruisers, when someone refers to me as a "biker", I assume they mean bicycles.

motorcycles are annoying...you'd think they'd cut us BICYCLISTS more slack but in my experience they actually cut us less than cars do.

I think it has to do with the "generation war." Most bikers are midde age to old males with beer bellies. They tend to ride with women/employees they picked up at the bar. On the other hand, cylists tend to be young and ride with girls they picked up at the local sorority. Just a twenty something years old view.

I'm leaning toward the therapist for your problem. Both my brother and I ride bicycles and Harleys. The only difference is that the Harley riders are a lot more friendly than any roadie I've ever encoundered.

There's a new model of Harley Davidson that's actually not loud. I don't know the model but my brother-in-law just bought one. The engine was built by Porsche for Harley. Very fast.

In the general generic sense it's "lawyer" i.e. I am a lawyer. When one refers to representation it is attorney i. e.
"I am Jean Jones's attorney"

I do have to say that bikers in my area seem to respect cyclists. There are not many roadies in my area and the bikers seem to identify with anyone on two wheels, whether it be a motorcylcle or a 'real' bike. (Real bikes have pedals.)

Im also a motorcyclist and i tend to agree. I give motorcyclists the signiture "wave under the handle bars" when Im riding my bicycle and it is almost always returned. I cant say the same for bicyclists.

Funny, I'm reading Hunter S Thompson's book on the Hell's Angels, and they refer to themselves as cyclists. Backwards, huh? This was in the 1964.
