How do you decide what pressure when adjusting trainers?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do you decide what pressure when adjusting trainers?

I got my trainer today, it's nothing special, but is a starter.
Well, you have to use a little knob to adjust the pressure of the roller against the tire. I am stuck here.

If I do give too little pressure, I feel like my tire can easily spin out. Also, it wears a narrow strip in the tire. I tried to give a little more pressure, the tire did indeed have a wider strip of wear.
My concerns though...

The wear looks really alarming, this was just with a minute or two of use. Also, it looks like hte tires are almost shedding.

These are GP4000 tires, I would like not to wear them out fast on a trainer. My plan is buy some cheapo and heavy slicks this weekend for the trainer, but I need something for the next two days!

If your tires are shredding, you probably have too little pressure. I adjust my trainer until the wheel is just touching the resistance unit, then give the adjustor about 1 complete revolution. The resistance unit is then pressing about 1/8" into the tire (this is a guesstamite).

If your tires show wear after a minute or two, you probably have the pressure improperly adjusted. I usually make sure my tire is fully inflated, then I adjust the pressure so that when I grab the rear wheel and jerk it up and down, it doesn't slip. No more and no less.

Backup tires are a good idea. GP4000s are too pricey to be shredded on a trainer.

RTFM

I use 2 full turns onto tires inflated to 110psi, which is more than recommended, but I like the added resistance.

This is a good rule of thumb for a Cyclops trainer, but if I did this on my Blackburn, it would be way too much pressure. It varies by trainer.

My CycleOps Fluid2 trainer says to turn the knob 1 full turn after the roller makes contact with the tire. Works fine for me. Clean your tire off before you mount it or you'll get little pits in the roller from the tiny little rocks in your tires.
