Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, I just got my Reynolds Alta Races, Ouzo pro and some white Deda bar tape, and Vredstein Fortezza SEs today.
Problem with the fork-the tube is incredibly short. Very short. Like, precut short. I need to measure it, but when side by side with an old specialized fork I had that was cut for my 62cm frame, it's a lot shorter. It's also got a really gross seam (there's no other way to describe it) down the middle of both sides of the fork, it looks terrible. This seam is not on my dad's ouzo comp. I'm a little disappointed.
The Alta Races look great though. DT spokes, not any of the other spokes out there.

Did you get one of the "new in the box" forks on ebay, or something else?

Measure the tube and compare it to the spec on the Renyolds site. Mine looked fairly short to my eyes too when I got mine (NIB from ebay), but will work just fine on my 56cm frame even after I put several cm's of spacers under the stem.

dial: I really love that old DA group. Only thing better would have been to top it off with the group's DA crank. But the black FSA looks good on there too.

re: Real Design Aero: that is an interesting looking fork and not quite what I was thinking of either. Doesn't look like the Aero that my LBS has either. Wonder if it's a brand new model, or an older one. I was looking at the HP Pro that my LBS had on sale. The HP Pro looks a lot like the CR3 fork that Flyte has in some of their stock pictures. I couldn't quite swing the extra $40 for it and wasn't sure if they had one with enough steerer tube for my frame at the time either. Oh well. Still interested to see THAT Aero fork on the Flyte too. Should be something different that's for sure.

I still have the D-A crank in my closet now, but it was either get a compact crank or give up Ben & Jerry's. I'm getting one of the QS2-S frames and I may transfer the Gossamer to that bike and put the D-A on the Flyte.
More than likely I will hold out for an FSA K-Force for the QS2-S though in which the D-A would only go back on if I can sell the Gossamer.

Well******************** Don't keep us in suspense! I want to see that fork on that frame....NOW!!!!!

I got the fork from wheelandsprocket.com for $108.98 shipped. Once I get the headset on the frame, the fork will go on too.. along with everything else - probably sometime later this week. Apparently my components are in new york right now, so another 900 miles and you'll have more pics!

I need to figure out how to install the headset on mine-I am a little hesitant to do it myself. Kinda tempted to take it to the LBS to have it done. I am a little scared of installing the BB too, but luckily the new campy ultra-torque BB/cranks look pretty easy to install.

Edit-That's a great price for that fork... I also noticed wheelandsproket has the SRAM Rival group on closeout for 649.99. Seems odd, but I am sooo tempted to try it out at that price.

What part are you hesitant about? Is it pressing the cups into the frame?

If you have the tool to tighten the BB cups, installing the BB should be very easy. Simpler now with the external bearings I think. Just make sure you grease the threads.

I think that's done... but I am so much of a newb that I don't know. I think when I picked them up he said he had pressed them. So if they are pressed I guess I don't know what the next step is!

Place the "silver looking" aluminum thingy that looks like a washer over the fork with the flat side down. Put a bearing set over it next with the chamfered edge pointing up. Slide the assembly into the frame. Put the other bearing over the top with the outside chamfer pointing down. Put the "brass colored" aluminum "split washer" on top. Install the top cover. Install spacers, star nut and top cap (after sawing the steerer tube to length.

Way too complicated for something so easy.

Thanks for the help!
Any idea what to do with the compression plug for the fork?

Yeah, I know someone with Park tools, so as soon as my stuff comes in the mail, I'm off to his place.

The only thing I'm waiting for to finish my build is a partial Ultegra group I bought of Ebay. I used "Buy it Now" and paid with paypal last Monday 10/16. I emailed the guy today to ask him when he shipped it, he wrote back that he will be shipping it tomorow Tuesday 10/24. Eight days to ship it! I'm pissed! I was looking forward to finishing it this week and riding it this weekend. Doesn't look like it's going to happen. Some Ebay sellers really piss me off.

GoM33 - that's a different fork. Real Design makes three models. The Signature, the HP Pro and the Aero. The one you've got linked in the Signature, I wanted the HP Pro, and the picture is of the Aero.

I ended up with a 40mm rake fork, I'd planned on getting a 43mm, but it was early in the morning when I placed the bid on ebay. We shall see...

If your fork has an aluminum steerer tube, then you need the star nut, if it is CF, then you need the compression plug. Trying to force a star nut into a CF tube will likely destroy both items.

So I just recieved my 07 veloce shifters, but they werent black levers...even though the picture was black levers and it never mentioned anything other wise. I'm hoping they can maybe swap the levers because I really was looking forward to the black shifters. I'll live, but the black would work much better

Document the procedure of building? It would be no different than any other frame.
