Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Reynolds 953 in production

I know it just became available to bike manufacturers this Spring but I was wondering if anyone knew when a production bike using this stuff will pop up. Googled it shows Mercian is working with it.
Will this be the new titanium? Can steel make it back in the pro peleton??? Is this stuff really that bada$$.

Waterford showed one built with gorgeous lugs at Interbike. It was stupid light, too. Polished to chrome brightness for only $3000! I might have some pics...

Waterford. If you end up going to their factory for a fitting then drop a line in the regional forum and pick up some other riders to accompany you are it's maiden ride...

I hope it catches on but since its supposed to as expensive as Ti I don't see the point unless you're a true steel lover, which I am.

So who is 953 right for? If you want lightness and durability titanium is probably the way to go unless you’re a die-hard steel fan. With the extremely thins wall (down to .3mm) of the 953 denting and buckling may be an issue especially if your hard on your bike but we have yet to see. Due to the cost of the material and heat-treating a 953 frame will be every bit as expensive as titanium. If you’re a person that just loves steel or wants a lugged or fillet brazed frame or just wants the polished luster of a stainless frame that is as light as steel can be, 953 is probably the choice for you.

953 has been prominently posted on the Reynolds website for at least a year (since October, 2005).

HERE is the current website description of 953 under "TUBING" - "STEEL", and earlier it was under "ABOUT US" - "HOT NEWS"...

This squirt gun isn't dangerous with water, but fill it with muratic acid and watch the respect grow. It's how you use the material that matters.

Carbon has caught such a big wave with most companies, if steel were to enter back into the main stream it once dominated it would have to boast a set of unique relavent advantages, easily repairable isn't going to mean squat to a pro team, they'd just get a new bike fedex'ed to them. If it's just as stiff, comfortable and light as carbon, then it would probably come down to workability, availability, which both tie into the final key element, cost.

Sounds like it's brittle and extremely thin-walled.

Not for me.

when steel is made to ride like Aluminum, it does seem to defeat the purpose of steel in the first place. If I want a 3lb frame, I'll buy an Aluminum one with carbon stays.

HOWEVER, i don't know anything about 953 aside from what I read on Reynolds site. Perhaps there's some discussion on the frame builders forum. I'll take a look right now. Reynolds site noted that it was really tough. Relating it to armor plating or something?

Reynolds 953 tubing is made by Carpenter Technology, the guys that also made Aeromet tubing a few years ago. https://www.cartech.com/about/index.html

Carpenter makes lots of different super-high-tech steel alloys that truely have superior mechanical properties. The problem is that many of these alloys, including the alloy used for 953, is VERY difficult to form and shape - such as for chain stays and butting the main tubes. There are also issues with heat treatment and loss of strength after welding.

I think the material has lots of possible up side; it will interesting to see how Reynolds and Carpenter work around all the difficulities with the metal. The 953 alloy is very corrosion resistant which is why people are comparing it to Ti. It will be interesting to see how companies like IF position the 953 frames vs. the Ti frames they make. Stay tuned.
