Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did I get an ok deal on this Trek?

Hi, new to the fourm, wanted some of the local experts to let me know how I did on this purchase. I've always ridden bikes and motorcycles but this is my first real road bike...

Picked this up a few hours ago to compliment my Trek 4600 mtn bike. Most of what I ride are concrete trails so I figured I could cover more distance on a road bike. I'm heavy into biking now to prepare for a Tae Kwon Do tournament I'm entering in Feb. 2007.

Anyway, I believe this to be a Trek 1500. I got it at the Pawn Shop for $400. Took it to the local bike shop to have the components checked out and adjusted and he said it looked like it had never been ridden...and didn't need any adjustments.

This is the lightest bike I've ever owned, the lack of weight is amazing....and it is very fast. The bike is dirty because I just got back from riding in the rain. Let me know what you think or if you have owned one of these.

I feel bad for whoever it got stolen from or for some insane reason had to pawn it off. Sweet bike.

Nice score! I hope you talked the pawn shop down a bit. They probably had no idea what it was worth.

Be careful. If you're like me you'll start liking road riding way more than mountain biking and that's when the trouble starts!

I was actually lurking on this forum last night contemplating a road bike purchase, reading about components etc so when I saw the bike at the shop I had a pretty good idea it was worth a lot more than $400. Being the cheapskate I am though I did try to talk them down and they weren't having any of it!! haha. On top of that they only offered me $125 for my Trek 4600 w/judy RockShoks and I wasn't having any of that so I kept it. I think I did pretty good, I'm about to leave for a lil 20 mile jaunt to downtown Fort Worth so we'll see how it works out.

surely that bike cannot be your size.

How much for it?? LOL!

Good score!

and, no, seeing that pump sitting there I don't plan to sneak in and try to take the bike.

haha, I'm somewhat of a self defense fanatic, in addition to owning and operating a mixed martial arts school I have a variety of weapons laying around to make an intruder wish they would've gone next door.

Just got back from my first ride. 30 miles in 2 hours and I think that's pretty good for a start. My legs are burning pretty good and I've got worse numbass than I get on my motorcycle after 400 miles!

Anybody in the Ft. Worth area want to go riding on Wednesday maybe?

I don't get over to the FW side of town very often to ride, but maybe we'll have to get a DFW group ride planning some time after you've got a few more road miles under your belt. I'm trying to get a ride put together for next weekend, but right now the weather isn't looking too cooperative.

Haha, thanks for recognizing my newbieness cuda! You're right though, there's no way I could keep up with those who do this all the time yet. My legs still feel like they're on fire. I only made it home without getting off the bike because I'm the most stubborn person I know and I refused to fail!! haha.

Speaking of confrontation, I just posted this on another thread and figured I would add it here.

On the way to my destination I came across 4 young hoodlums standing on a bridge I had to cross. As I was passing them one got semi in front of me and asked if "i wanted to trade bikes" with the implication he was going to take it. I told him no his bike sucked, laughed at him and rode off.

On the way back they were on a different bridge this time blocking it. I rode full speed at them but they weren't going to move so I stopped. "Is this a Care Bear blockade or something." "Uhh...yea, yea, its a blockade." "Well, ok, are you going to get the hell out of the way?" "Nah man, nah" "Well, I tell you what, I've been riding for an hour and a half and I'm going to rest for two minutes. When I'm done, if you haven't moved I'm going to break your arm and throw you into the river."

After that they tried to save face a little but they actually ended up sheepishly asking me questions about my bike and camelbak, ipod, etc. They tried to look tough and what not but I just laughed at them and poked fun. They were about 17 or so. One asked my age and I told him, 25. He said, "yea, I got a sister your age" To which I replied, "oh yea, is she as cute as you"

hahahaha, I crack me up.

The bike seems like a good deal. As far as the weapons...........to each his own. Mine are all kept elsewhere with maybe one gun in the house.

They best defense is a strong offense.

And the weapons get stored when my son is here, other than that they're accessible and live. But the real story here is my bike, which is too cool. Too bad its raining again today.

No...any firearms expert should know...the best defense is having a brain and using it....and avoiding confrontation when possible.

When are you going to buy your first kit and get a powermeter so you can train seriously?

Just to humor you, how did I not use my brain. 4 guys blocked the only bridge that crossed the Trinity River for me to get home. There was no way to avoid the confrontation. Had I pulled up and asked them politely to move they would've been all over me. Again, a strong offense is the best defense and scumbags only prey on the weak and timid. I was nervous, worried and a little scared of what it was going down, but showing them that would only increase my chances of being attacked. This is common self defense knowledge.

As far as the weapons, I live alone, grew up on a ranch around weapons and am a CHL holder. No problem there.

What kit are you talking about and what the hell is a powermeter? I've been training seriously for months now, but not to complete a 100 mile ride or anything else bike related. I'm training for a tournament to help get my dojang recognition. The bike is only a tool to help me train for that. Although I have to admit doing that 30 miles yesterday gave me a great feeling of accomplishment.
